Can anyone tell me....
.... what's so special about this crankshaft that justifies the asking price?

What's so wrong with that price? Have you priced any 1970 W30 special parts? Try looking at a complete 1970 W27 axle and that crank will seem like a drop in the bucket.
This is a W27 Rear 1 of 355 ever made. This rear has 3.91 gears. It is SZ stamped on the passenger axle tube. The rear timing cover was removed and rear inspected my a GM Certified Class Technician. Full inspection sheet filled out. This rear is in Extremely Excellent Shape! Determined to be a low mileage rear. Fluid is original with whale oil additive. Does not even smell!!
A rear like this just doesn't come up for sale! When you add a rear like this to your Oldsmobile, you can expect it the add a significant value to your Oldsmobile!
There is no disappointments with this. Asking $15.000 or B/O

What's wrong with that price is that there is no such thing as a "W-30" crank. It's no different from any other 1968-76 BBO crank that's drilled for a pilot bearing (yeah, except for the forged 68 cranks). There is no unique part number for a "W-30" crank. Contrary to what the seller claims, the "N" just means "nodular" and they all are nodular cast iron.

For 15 dollars I'll come to Alberta now and get it. I'll be there in 4 day.
Once you put a W in front of that 25, 30, 31, 350, 455 that number jumps. Is it worth it? I guess if your 1970 W-30 has a bad crank in it. The 27 rear has aluminum carrier I believe and the $1,500 asking is what they usually are. There was one at the Nationals last year for $1,500 that didn't look anything like the one Allan has. I have an original 70' W-455 intake on my 71' 442 motor which came bare bones. I bought it years back for I think $500, now I see them for $1,500 starting. I don't even think there's anything special about it aside from weight loss and it looks great shined up. I'd never pay $1,500 for one. It's technically not original to the car so aftermarket is just as good for me. If I had a W-30 that needed one I'd think about it. You can spend thousands building a W-30 and at the end of it it's still what it was built as but now modified. W-25 hoods in decent shape are starting to hit the 3k mark. My car didn't come with one so one from Thornton for $2,500 that made with modern materials to factory specs is the ticket for me as well.
There is a gentleman that restores W-25 hoods so if I was in the market for original I'd seek him out. And if that interests you Olds Pakrat can give you his info.
PS: I stand corrected on the crank, was typing same time as Joe.

I'm sure it was a typo by the owner of that axle. BTW, I was just posting that image and quote as information. It's not my axle or ad. I will say that anyone who thinks they can get that axle for 1500.00 is dreaming.
I do like the look and tried to duplicate it when I rebuilt the axle in my 72 Cutlass years back
