IMHO it has boiled down to not who is the best driver but who has the best car and team. Anybody who is in the top tier of NASCAR is already an excellent driver so it's the whole crew that makes the championship doable.

His team deserved it for the effort! The driver , well . He whined like a baby when he had yellow stripes on his rear bumper wrapped up in Home-Depo years ago .
