How-To Install Flasher (Location?)

Hi all!

I have a 72 Cutlass, that I recently replaced some bulbs with LEDs. Thus, I'm installing new flasher modules for the blinkers.

The hazard flasher was super easy to get to, however, I cannot seem to find/see the turn signal flasher.

I read that it is near the steering column under the lower dash - and that is also where I hear it blinking when the signal is turned on. Most said to install it from under the dash but even with my head stuck under the dash area by the pedals, I cannot for the life of me see exactly where it is. With my large hands, I do not see that happening.

Does anyone have any tips?

The flasher is on a wiring pigtail to the left (outboard) side of the steering column, in the metal lower part of the dash. It is supposed to be snapped into a clip attached to the top side of the metal, but often it is just loose. It is approximately below the wiper switch.

There is no "easy" way, short of paying someone else to do it. You might want to try reaching up under there with your cell phone camera and snapping a few pictures to get the lay of the land.

Yeah, I tried that and failed. Couldn't even see it with a flashlight and my head under the dash.

It's really easy to remove any of the three main dash gauges, would that create any easier access to it, or is the flasher too low?

Here you go. This is from the 1972 Cutlass Assembly Manual. Keep in mind you're looking at this from the back side, so what's on the right will be on the left when you're facing the dash.

And here is the reference to Section 1-3 Page 142. The box shows the flasher detail. The circle shows where that box (View A) is located.

Hugely helpful, thank you!

They really didn't want anyone to get to that flasher easily!

I had the same problem and could hear but not find it. I was about to lose my mind and this really made it simple to fix. Thanks for posting
