Has anyone on here put there own windshield in? did you use windshield butyl tape? does it hold ? If I use this butyl tape, what size do I need for a 70 Cutlass Supreme? Or is it best just to hire someone to do it? I like doing my own work when I can, and it looks like something I can do. Just need the pros and cons of do it yourself. Thanks

I've done several. It's not difficult, but you definitely need two people. I used the 3/8 butyl tape, but the factory style urethane is a better choice if you want to deal with it.

Be sure the pinchweld is clean, rust free, and primered. Be sure to dry-fit the glass and center it with the setting blocks. Use masking tape alignment marks if necessary to ensure you get it in the right place.

Wipe down the glass where the tape goes with lacquer thinner and let dry. Apply the tape to the glass, pressing gently. If the glass has an antenna lead, tape it out of the way on the outside.

Prep the car by having the side windows open. If the car has an antenna mast, remove it. Carry the class over to the car with the inside up, one person on each side of the car. Each of you hold the glass with one hand and reach the other through the side window and around the A-pillar. Clamp the glass between your two hands and move it into place on the pinchweld. Take care with alignment as you set the butyl tape into place on the pinchweld. Once located, press into place.

joe, my brother said he would help me, and he can get 2 power grip suction cups from a buddy. Didn't think about marking the position before putting it in! thanks

windshield install gm. do a youtube search. Jeff with first class auto glass walks through the whole process.

I did my one and only with urethane. Turned out great and solid.

One more thing, not sure where you live, but,it works better if you do it in warm weather. Also, do try to push it all the way in on one pass, keep going around the window a couple times. Don't push hard, at one the time, you can break the glass, especially on a corner.

I also bought a pneumatic calking gun to apply the urethane, well worth the 30-40 dollars.

Last install for me was done by the glass company that I bought the windshield from. $150 installed, in my driveway, so I couldn't pass that up.
