I purchased a survivor not sure if i want to keep it as i have to many things on the go. Is a 72 W30 a desirable car as it has all documents including original bill of sale. Even have new Polyglass tires rims restored new grill and other mouldings , dditional front fenders and trunklid rust free. Looking for some opinions as to keep it or sell.

Any year W machine is desirable. 72 does not need docs because of the X code VIN but a paper trail is great to have.

Is this a car that sold new in Canada? Post some pics and more details.

Yeah, I still think 72s are way under valued - especially with the X in the VIN. Post some pics. Heck, if you got it at a decent price and aren't necessarily needing the money, enjoy the car for a while, then decide. The craziest thing I do with my W30s is NOT sell them, but I just won't.

The 72 W-30s are waaaay undervalued in the market. The best ones struggle to hit $35K, so if this car needs any major work, consider costs carefully. The lack of value really makes no sense, either. Mechanically, the 72 cars are virtually identical to the 71s. The "X" code in the VIN makes them nearly clone-proof. I guess people are put off by the black inner fenders and the GA heads. If you want a real W-car, they are the buy of the Olds performance world.

i would like to thank each one of you for your honest opinions. I live in Montreal , Quebec , Canada and the car is presently in Champlain, New York. I am contemplating bringing it back to Montreal and start working on it or selling it. Has common rust issues bottom of front fenders , rear qaurters and trunk lid.

Out of all the Oldsmobiles I have had over the years (and that is many) I have one car that I truly regret selling. It was my 72 W-30. I like the looks of the 72 the most from the three years.

As others have said, be careful how much you invest into the restoration but I for sure would try to keep it.

The performance did change, lower compression, lower HP and TQ but most of us remember these cars being much faster than they actually were.

They make reproduction bumpers that are now pretty good Nothing beats an original bumper but its quite expensive to re-chrome them. On a W30 I would lean towards OEM but its a matter of budget. Shipping, repairing and re-chroming gets very expensive quickly.

Inline Tube had a restored one at Purestock on 9/16, turned low 13's.

I was tols reproduction do not fit that great so if i hols onto the car i will patiently wait until OEM turn up.

1970 is faster car. Performance of 1971 and 1972 is identical to each other. This is for bone stock cars. Today all the cars would perform the same after an engine rebuild to the same specs.

I got a Canadian 72 W30 and its by the most fun Oldsmobile I've own. Not the original engine but as other have mentioned, with the X in the VIN is was a relatively cheap way to get into the "W" club. Love the story about the W cars and the fact they are so easy to prove and reference production numbers, I think its a "W"in across the board. Gold and black is also one of the best combos too. Enjoy it! If you do sell it, it may be easier to keep it in the states.

look on the trim tag and see the build date a guy with a green and white 1 from Canada said he had the last car so if u got a June 15 or later u could b next in line for the thrown not every day u see a 72 w car up for sale and as other stated the only way to b sure u got the real deal is the X best thing Oldsmobile ever did on that w package

the guy in Canada you refer to is "oldsmobiledave". He posted a couple times above, and he has a documented 1972 W30 4spd. that is known to be the "last W30" made for 1972.
If "servexcell" could post a pic of the data tag it would help alot.

My car the last 4 speed car. It was built June 29 1972.

There are two known X code cars built after mine in July of 1972 but both were T400 cars. The last one was a yellow car and it sold new in Edmonton AB. The son of the original owner of that car is a member here.
