Wheel Question

A person on craigslist is selling four factory 1979 cutlass wheels with like new tires on the wheels. He says the 79 cutlass has disc brakes as does my 71 cutlass. Will these wheels work on my 71? Forgot to mention the wheels are 14 inch wheels and he wants $250 for the wheels and tires. I have attached a pic.

Thanks

I would not buy 14" wheels as the tire selection is minimal, hold out for a set of 15". $250 is a bit steep.

X 2. Hold out for the 15 with snap on caps. They can usually be found cheap. Maybe post a parts wanted add on here. Also check the dates on any used tires. The may look new but if they are old they may not be safe.

Also beware of "like new" tires. If they're old and/or were on a car that didn't move much they'll be problematic...tires do have a useful life span whether used or not, and will develop flat spots when sitting in one position for too long.

Are the wheels 6" or 7"??? I would stay away if they are only 6"...As for 14" versus 15", that's a personal choice... I have no problem purchasing 14" 70 series and some 60 series... Cooper and BFGoodrich I believe are still available...

If you are talking about the wheel in the photo, that's a 14x7. You can tell by the trim ring. Trim rings for 6" wheels are noticeably thinner.

As noted, the price is high for those. The best-fitting 14" tires that are readily available are the BFG 225/70-14s, which are close to the size of the original tires on most 60s Cutlii. The BFG 60 series tires in the 14" size have too small an outside diameter and leave a lot of daylight in the wheel opening. Even the 245/60-14s are about an inch smaller in diameter and only about 3/4" wider than the 225/70-14s.

Joe

I was thinking about buying those wheels and tires as rollers to move my convertible around so I can get the 18 inch wheels off the car as my future plans are to buy 15 inch SS1 wheels

I think this would have been some valuable info. I wouldn't give more than $150 for them because you may have them a long time. They are hard to sell for the above reasons.
