1972 Cutlass Supreme 442 Tribute 16k Original Miles discussion
Please see my eBay listing for details and pictures. Listing price is high @ $39,995, but I'm open to reasonable offers. You will be hard pressed to find a cleaner, original low mileage and original paint car. Thank you, Bob

It's a nice car with some nice upgrades but I honestly don't understand why people make tribute cars of models ( body style 4257) that never existed.

I agree with Alan why make a never existed car? how about making it an SX clone? That would have been cool? But still a nice car. Way to much money for such a car. Lots of nice work just done to the wrong car.

The street rod world calls these "phantoms" - cars the factory could have built but didn't. The Olds-caminos that people here like are a perfect example. Same with 442 Vista Cruisers (and no one seems to have a problem with those). I personally don't have a problem with phantoms, but don't call it a "clone" or "tribute" - it isn't. Clone, buy definition, means a copy of something that exists. Notchback Faux-Four-Twos never existed in nature.

Interesting. Maybe it's the color on the computer, maybe not. I noted that in High Resolution, the front fenders and deck lid are different colors than the rest of the body. Also the deck lid striping doesn't even come close to matching the pinstripes on the quarter extensions. And CS Holiday Coupes would have the OLDSMOBILE lettering with Cutlass emblem, never with a set of 442 numbers. That is something the PO did, not the factory. If you look at any of the CS Vert 442s, the deck lid should look more like this. Note also the lack of rocker stainless which was part of the W29 delete items. Yeah, those exhausts aren't right either, W29 appearance and handling cars didn't get them. Just a sample pic I stole off the web

If you read the eBay description it says the original owner bought the car new and added the w25 hood, 442 rear bumper and 442 deck lid emblems. He painted the hood to match, possible the deck lid too if there were holes that needed filling. The current owner/seller added the 71 style 442 grills and 71 style tailights and the side 442 emblems, which are mounted with 3m tape over the original Cutlass emblem holes. Looks like it could be turned back into a Cutlass Supreme fairly easily. Add the correct grill, tailights, and emblems. The only issue would be the holes from the 442 on the deck lid.

I think the pricing reflects 2 issues.
1. It's being offered as a 442 when it's not.
2. Those upgrades aren't cheap. It sounds like all the costs of those are included in the pricing strategy. Not realistic IMO. Cars are money pits. Adding new components that may cost $$$$$ doesn't make the car worth $$$$$. For the right buyer this will be a nice ride. Likely will appeal to someone looking for a pro touring classic performance car.

Wow, you guys really beat me up on this post! I figured I'd clarify a few things for my outspoken critics.
My ad clearly and truthfully describes the car and what was done to it. As stated, when I bought the car the original owner had installed the 442 on the deck lid. He had drilled the holes, so I did not want to remove them. So it wouldn't look too out of place, I added the 442s to the fenders. I like 1971 442 grills and taillights, so I added them as a personal preference. I do have all of the original parts that were changed.
I have had dozens of Cutlasses and 442s over the last 40 years and this is by far the cleanest one Ive ever had! As far as I can tell the paint is all original. The pictures of the floorboards don't do them justice, they actually have a sheen to them.
As for the price, I just paid for one wedding and have to pay for another one next year, so my wife asked me to sell a couple of my toys. I know the car is over priced. I figured if I put it too high, no one would buy it! LOL. I do know there is more money in this car than it is worth. I have $15k in the bulletproof drivetrain alone, not to mention what I paid for the car.
I have changed the title of my add to "442 badging", instead of "442 tribute", so it doesn't offend any of you guys.
Thanks for your input,
Bob
