How much should I insure my 71 Cutlass for?

Hey guys -

Renewing the insurance on my 71 Cutlass "S" with 350/2bl and TH-350 auto trans. The car has a little over 100K on it if I recall correctly. Runs great and the AC works - possibly with the original compressor. I got it from my father-in-law - who bought it new. The car has always been well maintained and is in very good "stock" condition.

What would you set the insured value at..... ?

Thanks in advance!

Get an agreed value policy from one of the well-known classic/antique car insurers.
Figure out what you think it's worth and what the replacement cost would be? I'd say 18-20K all day if the undercarriage is as clean as it looks on top. Options mileage originality all play into it. Have it professionally appraised by an appraiser that knows Muscle and Vintage metal.
I use J.C Taylor. Have for 30 years.

Thanks.... I was thinking $10 or 12 K.... but I could easily be off. The pics are maybe a little bit kind. The paint is fading a little, but the car is very solid.

X2 for J.C. Taylor... Since the insurance premium is based on the agreed value, my recommendation would be to insure the vehicle for the highest value you can afford from a premium standpoint and the highest value that insurance underwriters will accept... An appraisal from a reputable appraisal company sure won't hurt either...

I'd go look at what ones like yours sell for.. As you have to figure what it cost to replace it..

You don't need an appraisal. Depending on what the interior looks like, if the engine has been rebuilt, and how bad the paint is, your probably right at around $10-12k. However I'd try to insure it for $16-20k. Most insurance companies will require pictures of the exterior, interior, and engine compartment.

I went through this last year. I bought mine for 12k but insured it for 16-20k. I was looking at what would it cost to replace it if it got totaled.

x2

IMHO, $10k to $12k would be too low. I have my 71 98 insured for $10k through Hagerty and we all know that Cuttli are more popular than B/C bodies. As I recall it was only a few extra dollars on my insurance policy to boost the value from $8k to $10k.

Insure it for as much as you can, just in case. None of us want to use our classic car insurance but we have it for a reason... besides needing it to have a legally registered vehicle.

These two websites can help with establishing a value range.

https://www.hagerty.com/valuationtools
http://www.nadaguides.com/Classic-Cars

Also, as suggested, look at recent sales of similar cars, though auction values will probably be high.
