This is the response I got to my question about what dist to use and if a pertronixs 3 would work. I asked if they had any recommendations as far as distributor.

"Hi Gary, in order to use the timing control the distributor must be a 2 wire
magnetic pick up type. We have had good luck with MSD distributors."

Interestingly, the only distributor Summit lists which is computer control compatible is the FAST 305018.

The MSD distributors have one with vacuum advance and an additional one with mechanical advance only:

It was my understanding that in order to use a distributor with the EFI system the advance had to be locked out completely...

I would contact FiTech before purchasing a system. I would definitely want a definitive answer on what distributor provides timing control.

I looked at multiple vendors also trying to find a distributor that can be computer controlled and finally asked Fitech.

You may need to ask Fitech for specific distributor brand and part number to get the right one.

One more thing, I read somewhere a thin metal plate may be needed between the "stock" intake and Fitech carb. To prevent vacuum leaks. Looking for that source again to post here. BRB

So far I've seen all the 4 barrel tbi's working better with a spacer or the divider in the intake milled down.. have not seen dyno pulls with a factory q jet intake yet.. but the dual planes with solid divider have fueling issues.. And milling the divider some fixes the a/f issues to some cyl. and picks up some power to boot..

It's interesting that a single plane manifold runs better than a dual plane manifold.

Anyone else hear about this?

Single planes ?? yes on multi port efi..


on the tbi you mill the divider a little,, not hog it out

EDIT: This adapter did not work due to butterfly interference with the FiTech.

I tried that adapter.. too thin. It didn't work for me on my 350.

Did it leak or was there another problem with it?

I had butterfly clearance issues with my fitech trying to use it with a spread bore manifold.
Had to go with a 7/8 adapter to make it work.
Unless I was missing something I can't see how it would work with factory intake?

Interesting. It's listed as a spread bore/square bore adapter. Do you have the OAI hood? If so does the foam air cleaner fit right with the 7/8 adapter?

No my hood is just an S hood.
I used the spacer from speedway motors.

If you have a square bore intake ( as in holley will bolt on) you are fine, and will not need any adapters.



I used a Tanks inc. Fuel tank with in tank pump.

I'm happy with the unit so far. I have only put on about 400 miles, and there a few fine tuning issues I need to make but otherwise its great.

What improvements are you seeing?

Possibly near the top of my list would be the warm starts! Bump the key..
But I would have to say all starts are improved.
Much stronger and responsive throttle response.

I'm sure these can all be achieved with a good carb too, but that's something I didn't have.

That quick start makes a big difference. I hate the cranking the old cars need to start. Does it sound about the same or stronger? I can't wait to get one on my 455. Don't remember, can you now use regular unleaded instead of the premium gas?

I should mention the sound is heavy vacuum, if i am at 1500 rpm and kick it down on the road it's distinct sound I love it! And the response. It resembles a modern car.

I'll be honest I have run 91 octane all the way down to 87. I did NOT notice a bit of difference. I read on the Chevelle forum where a guy was running E85
