Trim tag decode. Can't find the reference site...

Trim tag decode. Can't find the reference site...

My father-in-law has two 442s. A '68 and a 69, both have been in the family since 1 year old. He would like to see what the trim tags mean. Can someone here decipher them both? Black is the '69, green is the '68.

ST69 33687 is a 1969, Lansing built Olds Holiday coupe. 415517 is its sequential build number and should be present on the block and trans. Its well documented the 442 got the Cutlass body tag
TR930 is the interior trim code, black
10 10 is the body upper & lower colors. Ebony Black on Black. Very uncommon body color.
06B is the month and week of the build, 2nd week of June a very late build car.
The VIN should read 344879L415517

The 68 tag is as follows:
09A is 1st week of September(1967), an early build 68.
68 = 1968. 33677 is the body style, a club (post) coupe. Same deal with the Cutlass body tag on a 442.
LAN 110631 is Lansing build sequence # 110631 off that line. Again the block and trans should have these numbers to be numbers matching.
TR 944= Trim color Dark Gold poly interior
G-2 is the body colors. Willow Gold with a white(edit black not white) roof?
The VIN # should read 344778L110631

You nailed it even through the thick paint, although the car has a black roof. The -2 is black, I believe, as it is on my '68 convertible -1 is white, right?
I know I saw a very complete listing of trim codes for 67/8/9 online somewhere and for the life of me Google can't help me locate it. Where is all this data???

Any idea HOW rare the black '69 442 is? Its 100% numbers matching, while the '68 received a dealer warranty engine replacement in '70. Horrible color that '68 or I'd probably have it.

Just a slight variation here. The Fisher body number on the trim tag has nothing to do with the VIN. They are two completely independent numbers, one having to do with how Fisher Body numbers their body hulls and the other having to do with the sequence in which the finished product was numbered at the assembly plant. Here's my cut.


For the '68:
09A = time build code = September (09), first week of that month (A), 1967 (an early production car)


ST 68 = style/model year = 1968


33687: 3 = GM division = Oldsmobile, 36 = model series = Cutlass V8 (all 4-4-2 models got the Cutlass V8 code on their trim tag in '68 from Lansing), 77 = body type = sports coupe (2-door post).


LAN = assembly plant = Lansing MI


110651 BODY = Fisher body number (again, has nothing to do with the VIN on your car)


TR 944 = interior color and front seat type = willow gold with bucket seats


G - 2 PAINT = lower body color (G) and upper body color (2) = willow gold with a black vinyl top


Now for the '69:
ST 69 = style/model year = 1969


33687: 3 = GM division = Oldsmobile, 36 = model series = Cutlass V8, 87 = body type = holiday coupe.


LAN = assembly plant = Lansing MI


415517 BDY = Fisher Body number (again, no relation to the VIN)


TR 930 = interior color and front seat type = black interior with bucket seats


10 10 PNT = lower and upper body colors = ebony black for both


06B = time build code = June (06), second week of that month (B), 1969

Thank you! Yes that mirrors what droldsmorland said, except where I already knew that 2 was for the black vinyl roof.

Just want to point out that it's important to express what kind of roof - paint or vinyl?

Of course, if it was paint, it'd be another letter.

Right. Would have been G G for green paint and roof. G 1 for green and white vinyl roof or convertible top, but the body code is not convertible. Got it. Given its a 99% original car, in the family since late '69, the only part I really didn't understand was the date code.

yep yep thanks for further clarification all, I was bassackwards on the roof color.. A Black body wasn't too common but by no means rare.
The 68 442 was an early build car. The 68 model year actually started in August or September of 1967. The 69 was built late in the production run so it was actually built in 69. Its dam near a 70. Definitely towards the last 69s out of the gate.
Both cars are worth having especially with a paper history trail. Black is more desirable for sure but some do like the willow. Colors can be changes easily.
Either one a stick car?

The '68 is an auto with a 3.73 and P/S. The '69 is a stick with 4.11s. The '69 is faster until you break 100, then the '68 passes. All hypothetical of course. ;-)
Both will stay stock, always. Other than a few bolt-on period correct chrome goodies and period correct aftermarket wheels - 14" Cragars. Those have been on both cars since they needed their first set of new tires (didn't take long.) Both cars have under 100k on the ticker, the '69 has about 44k now.
