shipping a manual transmission.

What would be the best way to ship a 4 speed from California to Kentucky?

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Brian

strap it to a pallet, then build a box over the top of it with OSB boards, and take it to a truck shipping company.

you could also buy a bus ticket and put it on a greyhound bus if you can arrange to meet the bus when it arrives.

It would probably have to be fairly clean to do the greyhound method though.

If it is Muncie with aluminum case (i.e. lighter than Saginaw), then you should be able to ship UPS Ground Oversize. I bought a Muncie for my Chevelle and the guy shipped it in a wood box this way. You also need to make sure the oil is out or they wont take it. Now this was 7 years ago, so you may want to go to UPS website and see what their max weight is these days.

If it is a Saginaw, probably too heavy and might need truck freight like previous poster said.

This.....and get quotes.

Cost me ~$200 to ship a T-56 6 speed manual from Dallas to Chicago in a large plastic bin via freight.

I sold a Saginaw a few months ago and shipped it to Ohio from California using fed ex ground. I placed it in a cardboard box with more than enough padding. I also threw the shifter in there. I can't recall the exact price but it was around 70-80 bucks. I think it helped that I told them it was going to a business. Probably saved a few bucks too.

Trans freight

I bought a borg warner T-10 for my '62 f-85 and the person who shipped it built a neat little box out of 3/4 plywood and shipped it UPS ground. worked great.

Most manual trans. can be shipped by UPS or FedEx Ground. Build a wood box and cover that with cardboard (to avoid the "non-box" fee). Probable cost in the $65-85 range.

make sure you ship in a small crate if using any express service like ups fed ex ....etc. if they cant lift it , they cant throw it. lol and pack the crate well. The max limit on a ground shipment with most companies is 150 lbs , so it would be cheaper to ship ups or fed ex , but ive seen more destroyed packages from ups then fed ex .... so I would go with fed ex ground.
