The Parts Place - GM A-body fuel senders

The Parts Place used to sell 68-72 GM A-body fuel senders for single line and return line applications. Went to buy one last week for my nightmare and these are now on "unknown delivery" and I didn't get the notion the PP knew when they'd be available again. Anyone heard anything about this, and maybe know where I can find an outlet-return sender for my Concours?

Under sending units, FT11054V and FT11055V, both say "Call"...

Thank you,

Huh???

Haven't ordered anything, nothing on layaway. And the only time the truth hurts is when I trip over it in the dark...

Anyway, emailed Fusicks and Inline, awaiting reply.

Auto City Classic needs a pic of my sender, will get that to them soonest.

Thank you all for the input,
Tom

rroth,
That's cool, just was hoping you had me confused with someone else that you knew had a wagon sender on layaway someplace. Really hoping right now...

Email from Stephen O'Brien at Fusicks says they don't have a wagon sender...

Hunt continues...

minor update...

Called Parts Place and was told pretty directly that they don't anticipate ever having these again.

Still checking around, will update if something comes up.

Tom, I bought the ILT sender last year. It's a perfect replacement for OEM in most aspects. Only thing I noticed was the ground wire was a little shorter and the angle it comes off the sender is different than OEM. Not a big deal since you'll never see it once the tank is back in place.

I just looked at the link to auto city classics and they have ILT beat for price on a single line fuel sender by about 30.00. I don't know what quality the auto city classic part is though. I'm happy with my ILT one though.

Actually just called In Line, and they cannot help with a unit for a wagon (side mounted tank), nor can help with parts for repairing.

Rock Auto says no on wagon units either.

Leaning towards buying a new Coupe/Sedan sender and hacking it up to make mine work.

Thank you,
Tom

hey buddie 1. almost all parts come in containers from other countries and we had a huge problem on the east coast waters so that is that. 2. quickly call around to everyone they almost all use the same countries parts and maybe have a old stock one in stock now and spring and parts are going to be coming and going fast.

Stay away from "The Parts Place" They will take your money. Send you the wrong parts. Charge YOU 25% restocking to fix their error and then make a mistake again. Oh and treat you like crap all along.

Stay away!!

Hi All,

OK, being the test subject here. Sent my sender to Tri Starr Radiator for a rebuild. Couldn't find anyone else local to me who was interested. Too old a car? We will see how it goes and works out. They should get it by next Friday, 8/23.

Best,
Tom

Another update...

I contacted TriStarr about my sender. All rebuilt and I should have it by next Wednesday. I will update when I get it back and installed.

Fingers crossed...

Best,
Tom

Got the sender, looks very nice, hooked it to the sender wire and ground, and it is accurate at all levels at the gage. Will install this week and see how it is when I <finally> fuel up.

OK, condensed update from another forum on this...

It was pointed out to me that my rebuilt sender no longer matches what it looked like when I sent it out. So I compared it with other units I have and sure enough, there is something missing from my pickup tube, like 2-3 inches. Need to call TriStarr tomorrow and see what is up. Not happy right now...

Top is my original without the return line, middle is a spare with return line from a Vista Cruiser, bottom is the rebuilt sender...
IMG_3838_zpsa4846675.jpg

So, I emailed them and started with that. Politely but firmly asked why this mod was done and how they are going to correct it. if I don't get a reply in a resonable time I will start calling.

Ruined for my weekend.

So anyway, got a reply, needed to check it out, but life and work get into the way...

According to TriStarr, the "cut was made for the new strainer to fit. This kind of strainer is not flexible. The strainer is built so that it will only pickup off the bottom of the tank so that it does not need to lay on its side to function. I beleive that it should pick up the fuel right down to the bottom."

So last night I tested his belief. Installed the shortened pickup and added fuel to the tank until the pickup was submerged. Hooked up a remote electric pump and pulled out as much fuel as was possible. This gets the pickup above the fuel level sucking air. Pulled the redone sender and installed my original sender, and did the process again, pumping out fuel until the pickup was pulling air. The difference was about 24 fluid ounces, so about 3/4 of a quart . I am going to let it be and install the rebuilt sender and get on with the project.

Still dissapointed at the incomplete expanation of what was involved in the repair, but maybe I shouldn't be, cuz if the length difference weren't pointed out to me I probably wouldn't have paid attention.

After I was done with the test outlined above, I proceeded to pump all of the fuel from the tank, down to the bottom. Got about a quart and a half of fuel out (48 oz), so if you run a wagon tank down to the bottom, it really is almost empty, with a quart of fuel and whatever else is in there.

So, if you need a wagon sender rebuilt, TriStarr can do it. If I had known about the need to trim the pickup, I would have forgone the filter and that little modification. Going to get the sender into the tank, and the tank into the car. Need to finish this thing up.

Hope this helps someone,

Tom

I would not worry that it will not pump the last drop out of your tank. Most of us don't let it go lower than a 1/4 tank anyway. I'd install it and enjoy.

Cost was $185, clean, fix sender, rewire lead wire and ground, new strainer (and modified tube!) labor and shipping.

Agree on not going to the bottom fo the tank, just didn't want to end up with a 19 gallon capacity/16 gallon range tank.
