Question Painting the Engine Parts

Might be a dumb "?", but what parts that attach to the engine should be painted to match the main block color? Gold being the factory engine color...to be considered "original, factory stock"?

Far from a dumb question.
I want to lnow this also as I have a 350 to paint next year also.

Does anyone have a known factory 350 that has never been repainted? If so, some detailed photos would be great!

I do know the accessory brackets, carb, exh manifolds, and crank pulleys are NOT painted gold!

I think it would easier to say what does get painted gold [or bronze]

As best I can remember only engine [ including heads, intake manifold, oil fill tube, valve covers, oil pan and water neck. ] Of course the carb, brackets [and what's on the brackets of course] exhaust manifolds do not

Jamesbo: Thanks for the input. I take it that the haromnic balancer gets painted gold-bronze too? Do you happen to know what the color code is for the gold-bronze Olds color?

I've allways gotten it from Fusick's in a rattle can.

See if this thread helps at all [wrong color obviously]

Unpainted 350 rocket. Hope this helps. Water pump was gold but has been replaced. Pulleys and hamonic bal black, alternator bracket black, gold on bottom. power steering pump and bracket black, throttle bracket (on firewall) metal grey looking color. What color would the ex manifolds be painted? I have rattle cans I bought from Fusicks, just need the time to paint.

Your engine has red hoses like mine.... are they correct? Or are they supposed to be black? The red ones were on her when I got her. Is there a difference between the red ones and the black ones besides the color?

Here is a pic of my engine.

I'm not sure, I believe red is correct for heater hoses. They were on the car when I brought it also. I like the looks of the red hoses. I had a 67 Pontiac (my first car) back in 82 and the heater hoses were red also.

Sandy,

You're missing the plastic bracket that holds the upper radiator hose off the fan shroud. See that dimble that has a hole in it for the screw? Dat's a MUST [and yes Fusick has them] Add it to your list. Also look at those two holes on the drivers side fender well. Isn't there spose to be a plastic wire hold down there.

I'm not trying to be critical, I've just noticed Blue needs sum'in else to occupy the endless hours he spends here.[And you want her perfect]

Doubting me about the heater hoses Sandy?
Some people may take that as a real slap in the face.

Black ribbed heater hose.
1968 and before has the white GM logo stamped black hose, some early '69's had it too.

GM may have used the red hose at some point in time but I don't recall ever seeing it?

For somebody that's not trying you're sure doing a good job Jamesbo.

Endless hours here?
I'm usually sleeping and I'm bronco bustin' my wombats out in the corral the rest of the time?
I get on here between milkings.

Sandy humiliated me, I may never be able to look at another engine again.
I may have jokingly said that I can take it but I have the tears of a clown... when there's no one around.

I told Sandy about that clamp a long time ago but I think she wants the upper radiator hose eaten by her fan blade.
I think those holes on the inner fender are where the cruise control bracket mounts?
Missing the clamp that goes on the A/C bracket for the heater hose.
The inner muffler bearing is installed backwards too?

That engine looks okay, a can o' paint and a few brush touch-ups is all it really needs, why cover up all that original patina that took so long to accumulate?

Not to mention that the radiator hose itself is on bass-ackwards....
Shroud clamp (if trying to install it) would not reach and hose is too close to alternator.
I had once thought it could go on both ways, but one day i realized they cannot, and that was when I was trying to get that little clamp on, too...

Those are 2 of the 3 cruise tranducer bolt hole dimples.

FATRATMATT: So the harmonic balancer and the other parts you named are correctly paint" semi-gloss black? The water pump semi-gloss black? (yours is red...). I have seen a lot of folks painting the balancer and w/pump gold-bronze. Going for as close to factory as can be. So basically, the block, the heads, the valve covers, and intake are the only items that should be painted gold-bronze? Oil pan? LMK..Thanks for your help!

Bluevista already told me about that. I haven't gotten it yet but I will!!

....Doubting me about the heater hoses Sandy?

Nope... I would never doubt you!! I was just curious because I never saw other red hoses before in any of the engine pics on here. Probably cause they're supposed to be black! LOL!!

....The inner muffler bearing is installed backwards too?

Now wait a minute....... you are such a shi*!!!!!!

Whaycha gonna do with her brake booster?

Yep.... it is not beautiful. Eastwoods has a nice paint kit I thought about getting. Anything will be a big improvement! I want it to look beautiful!

.....Not to mention that the radiator hose itself is on bass-ackwards....

It is?? Well there's a new one that hasn't been mentioned before! We'll just have to remedy that now won't we?? Wonder why they would put it on backwards?

....why cover up all that original patina that took so long to accumulate?

Because patina doesn't win trophies!!! Beautiful Olds gold does! LOL!

By looking at the picture of Lady72nRob71's engine,it looks as if he has the same upper radiator hose I have and is able to hook up the plastic clamp to the shroud.
I can't get my plastic clamp to fit around the hose and reach the shroud to be bolted properly.
From looking at pictures on the net I've noticed some upper hoses are longer at the end that hooks to the radiator.Mine and Robs hose looks like about 2-3 inches of straight hose before it reaches the first bend from the radiator. Some I've seen look like they have 4 -5 inches of straight hose before they reach the first bend from the radiator
I thought this might be the reason I can't get my clamp attached but maybe not.I thought I might need the longer hose.
Here's a pic of mine, anyone have any ideas or thoughts as to why my clamp will not reach?
Geez...I can't wait to detail my firewall, looks horrible in pictures.
thanks,
Walter

The upper hose should have a long end that goes to the engine and a short end that goes to the radiator. Most modern mechanics do not know right from wrong here, because the hose phyically fits both ways....

Here is the wrong way (when I bought the car):

Note the hose is too close to the alternator.

Here is the right way - note the shorter straight end goes to radiator:

Walter, that is odd that yours does not fit right - looks like it is installed like mine.
Try running down the strip a few times to get it nice and hot and maybe when everything has expanded, the clamp will fit!
