New Toy! I picked up a very rusty 1968 442 4 spd car today

Some of you may remember the "cannibal" car I picked up a couple years ago. It had a cherry floorpan that I didn't know what to do with... well now I do! The car I got today has much more rust than I'm used to seeing in Oregon cars. The paperwork I found with it shows it was in the Willamette Valley in 1971 and the tags expired in 1980. It does have the original engine and transmission, I verified the vin numbers on both. The rear end is a 3.23 open code SE. The carb is from a 1968 GTO?(7028267 WE) but from the amount of gunk on the engine it may have been changed when the car was young. It has the Tic Toc Tac, manual steering and brakes, console and bucket seats. The transmission does have something that I don't recognize, it's a electrical plug and linkage on the drivers side of the gear box. Is this the backup light switch? The 1968 project car I already had was built in Lansing the fourth week of February 1968, Jade green exterior black bench seat column shift automatic. This new addition was built in Fremont the third week of March 1968 and it's Jade Green with black bucket seats and console. They both need a lot of time and money before I could put either of them in a car show, but they look like twins sitting in the driveway! I think I'll be turning wrenches until I'm 90 just trying to rebuild all the project cars I've drug home. But I'm having fun... so I'll continue until I can't do it any longer! Attached are a few pictures but I've uploaded a bunch to my photobucket site if you want to see more: http://s90.photobucket.com/albums/k2...20speed%20442/

Wow John! Congratulations! What are the chances finding two cars with the same color combo? Which one are you going to start on first?

Nice find - you know you needed another!
Start a project thread and lets see the transforamation.

Hey - I am looking into a foreclosure deal on 19 acres of land in SW Medford. Maybe YOU need this more than I do!!

Thanks Guys!

W-30dreamin, yes sitting next to each other they make a cool pair!

Don, I purchased this from a car guy in Lebanon and the previous owner before him was in Philomath. I believe that's where it sat for the last couple decades.

Thanks Henry, it's been a lot of years since I've looked at a factory 4 speed setup.

getawaycar, I'll likely make the automatic car a driver first. I believe I have most of what's needed to replace the rust on this one. I enjoy turning wrenches but don't have experience with the cut and weld body work yet. I'm going to have to learn now for sure!

Boldsmobile, that's my motto I've got plenty of projects to work on but its hard to pass up something interesting like this. Most of the project cars I've come across are missing the original drivetrain. That's one reason I was so interested in this one.

Rob, Cool! Hey, old buddy old pal old friend... if you want to build a large shop/barn/anything on your acreage I'll help you fill it up

Gonna tell you what I tell my dad ever since I made the mistake of showing him the internet and Ebay. You know you could have a pretty nice car if you put all your effort and $$ in to one car and quite dragging more home.

Crontrats on the find. The rust does not look to bad. Well worth saving that one.

Good morning Richard. Yep, my local car buddies have told me the same. If I sold everything I may have upwards of $50,000 which could fund one really nice car. Someday I may have to downsize the collection, but for now I'm still having fun! John

More rust than I'm used to, but I know you guys in the Rust Belt save cars like this all the time. John

Interesting. Third week of March 1968 build and it has a 34487 body tag. As usual, Fremont did things differently than the other plants.
