My teenage son has come around!
My oldest son is 14, almost 15. He has always liked my '78 Z28 because it is loud, has a big block and is scaaaarry fast. When I finally found my '73 Cutty he kinda liked it too. He appreciated the sentimental story behind why I wanted it and understood why I had to have it. He appreciated that it was a low miles, bone stock, survivor. So I was reminding him the other day, when he was trying to decide what new XBox 360 game he wanted with the money that was burning a hole in his pocket, that 16 and a drivers license is not far off and that he should be putting money back for a car (been telling him that for awhile! And he has some). He thought about it. We talked about cars, insurance, a job and responsibility. And I told him that we could probly get him a decent car for little money as we are close friends with a person that is in charge of auctioning drug seized and repo'ed vehicles. He said.... "Well, as long as it's an Olds like yours and I can hot rod it like the Z. I'm there."
Ladies and Gentlemen, I had to choke back a tear I was so over joyed when he said that! Now the search begins for a father son Olds project!

He could buy a '73 Cutlass and put a Chevy big block in it...or buy a '73 Monte Carlo and put an Olds big block in it...or do it right, and buy a '73 Cutlass with a 455.
Whatever you buy, make sure he is not "hot rodding" on the streets - take it to the strip. The last thing you need is the outcome of bad decision making of a teenager.

Good luck to you!!! Some advise from someone who is in the process of a father and son project. Start as soon as possible, go slow, and don't patronise. Patience really is a virtue with a father and son project. So far so good with mine!!!

It's great that he has such an interest in old cars and not that new rice burner crap. Hopefully, you'll be able to find a nice one for you both to fix up.
My kids are 3 and 6 and they always want me to take them out in the Cutlass. Hopefully I will be as lucky as you.

Back in late 1985 (Wed, Dec 23, 1985 to be exact), I got my driver' s lincse at 15!
The two cars I learn to drive was the 1973 Toronado (455 4-bbl) and the 1980 AMC Eagle. Loved the Toronado, hated the AMC.

I think the biggest problem will be me fighting the urge to guide him into something that dad thinks is cool! LOL!

My son is 14 too. Likes my cutlass and has helped me a lot during restoration. He recently told me that they never made a camaro that wasn't good looking.
Not exactly what I wanted to hear but we're not talking Toyotas either.
I'll still take that as a victory.
I'm OK with a classic Chevy, or Pontiac, or Olds, or Mopar, or Ford. I'll look forward to working on any of them with him.
I'm still having trouble with the Yankees though. Since I'm a Red Sox fan.

I have one that is 23 now and he has shown some interest in the SX but not much in my 71 Convertible that I've had for 23 years. With him being the only child he knows what he'll get when the time comes. I'll have to leave a trust for the cars!!
