Question make 1966 cutlass fender into 442 fender

I'm wondering if I can cut the opening & weld tabs to mount the ornament. The original has a lip all the way around it probably for strength. Does anybody have any pointers for this change over?

I have one someone has done a change over on. They cut the entire opening out and welded it in. Looks great and can't tell from the outside.

If you are careful, you can leave strips of metal to bend into the mounting tabs. The factory didn't punch out a big hole and weld in strips; the hole was "saw-toothed" leaving the strips formed into shape.

Thank you every body for your info. I'm gonna practice on rund to runds suggestion. If I'm not happy with my results I'll buy the cut outs & weld them in. Thanks again

I went through this last fall, and was able to do it with the fenders on the car w/o welding anything...

https://classicoldsmobile.com/forums...op-cutout.html

1st thing you'll need to do is make outline template of the scoop itself- And a 2nd template that the scoop "fits" into to represent the width of the lip.

Then you can use the diagram i attached in that thread to place it on the fender in the right spot.
Then cut it out with a dremel.

Rather than try to replicate the tabs- i made a bracket that fit over the back of the scoop and attached to it with speed nuts, this holds the scoop to the fender. Worked out real well. I was able to install it all on the car- had to remove the inner fenders and the bottom fender bolts and carefully pull the bottom of the fender out- but i was able to reach all the speed nut studs.

anyway- hope this helps!
