Amazing what can be found with some searching.I always enjoy this as much as enjoying the vehicles them selves.I was disapointed when olds was cut off in 04.So much potential for the brand was still their.Just needed the rite people to make it happen.Just imagine a new culass or 442 RWD with all the power you could want.Maby even with a vintage or retro look like some other vehicle brands have done.To anyone that likes buicks sorry ahead. But I think gm should have gotten rid of buick and at least kept olds.I mean they have caddi why do they need two luxury brands.I used to have pictures around of old cars but would have to search for them and see if any of the newpaper clippings are still around. But thank you to all of you that have added pictures to this cool thread. You help keep the history and past of olds alive.
I know i can find pictures of a delta we had years ago not sure of any dealer pics though.

GM has been selling large numbers of Buicks in China (more cars than in the USA), one of the biggest, fastest growing markets in the world.

BEIJING — General Motors and Ford captured four spots among China's best-selling passenger cars in 2011, with the Buick Excelle commanding top spot with sales of 253,514 units.
The performance is even more remarkable considering that the entire Buick brand sold only 177,633 units last year in the United States, where Buick is just launching a version of the Excelle sedan, rebadged as the Verano.
The Chevrolet Cruze was another popular model in China, with sales last year of 221,196 propelling it into 3rd place. The Chevrolet New Sail ranked 7th, with sales of 197,874, while the Ford Focus moved into 10th place, with sales of 188,961.
Volkswagen placed four cars in China's top 10 last year, including the Lavida, Jetta, Bora and Santana. The remaining slots were occupied by the Hyundai Elantra and the FAW Xiali — the only Chinese domestic brand to crack the top 10.
The BYD F3, which had been the country's best-seller the previous two years, tumbled to 11th place, as sales plunged 30 percent to 183,832.
Inside Line says: Buick's popularity continues to soar in China.

Too bad Olds and Pontiac couldn't ride it out long enough to sell in China. Of course everything is cookie cutter now days anyway- badge engineering. We all know Olds used to sell a millon cars a year in the US from 77-79 and intermittedly through 85 and 86. Thanks to the rear drive Cutlass Supreme that once could sell over 500,000 units a year.

In its last few years, Oldsmobile out sold Buick, but Buick was marketed in China, Olds wasn't. I saw a few Regals driving around Beijing when I was there last.
It would have made more sense to me to keep Chev, Olds, and Cadillac. I would have kept Pontiac too but if only three could be saved, then the above makes more sense to me. Chev is entry level, Oldsmobile is mid level and Cadilliac is High or luxury level.
The way it is now, Chev is entry, Buick is luxury level and Cadillac is luxury level. It's not balanced. That's why I'm looking right now at a Volkswagen Passat CC Highline. Without Oldsmobile, I don't feel any particular brand loyality to GM. I have even been looking at Fords.

Did Olds division make money? No. Did Buick division? Yes, or at least it didn't lose as much at the time and was considered to be in a better financial position and/or easier to rescue and therefore worth keeping. Part of that better financial position, or at least better financial potential, was the the China sales you mention.
I also remember reading back at that time that simply shipping some Oldsmobiles to China to capture some of those sales that Buick was getting wasn't so simple. The Chinese were a bit eccentric, and they saw Buick as having the reputation, like Cadillac, of being a classic example of American big-car luxury and extravagance. That was not their view of Oldsmobile. We all know over here that Olds was every bit the land-yacht maker that Buick was, but markets, especially foreign ones, can be peculiar.

But there's a lot more to it. When GM was trying to open a plant in China in the late 90's GM wanted Cadillac. The Chinese were emphatic that the plant be Buick. Buick has been a sign of luxury in China since early in the 20th century. Somewhere there's a really good story about GM and their ties to China which revolve around Buick but I couldn't find it.
We own a Buick Enclave. If my wife didn't like it so much I'd have bought an Acadia or Traverse. It's just a polished version of the other two.

Thanks
Thanks for postin'... great ones. Funny, 'cause the fancier and more glamourous they make the dealerships now, the less exciting and fun they are to go to. Everythings so pasteurized and homogenized looking. Don't hold a candle to a little mom & pop operation in Slippery Rock, USA, with paper covering the picture window 'cause the new models had arrived! <goosebumps>

I spent a lot of time on some State of Michigan websites, historical centers in Lansing, and was referred to the MSU library, and have come up empty on University Olds pics. I don't know how you do it! I installed super adblocker, and am getting those damn dodge pop up ads anyway on this thread!
