junior supercar: boy you hit the nail on the head, since this motor was built to NHRA spec. the exhaust is killing the power big time. I know that with headers, more gear (5:00) and a 9" drag tire this car is capable of very low 12 sec times and even high 11 s. My 68 Ram Rod ran 11:80 @ 115 mph and this car only weights 250 lbs. more!

jaybird: They told me cause I asked "why". 1) 25% color and that "plain jane look" 2) 25 % rarity you never see these at car shows 3) 25% it was not "over restored" as it looks like it was just deliver at a dealership, with all the factory flaws, 4) 25% the restoration was outstanding, so I deserved to win! Now this is from a junior editor who saw this car and the other 12 finalist too!

380 racer: Man I wish my car leaves like yours does! That is still my favorite video, can you say "hook up". My 68' Ram Rod was like that, I would complain about traction/track prep and I would get shouted down at the drivers meeting, "damn your car hooks in a mud puddle what are you complaining about!" Hard leaving small block I miss that rush. Many still cannot believe (depending on track conditions) I was running 38 to 45 degrees of total timimg with the thiness rod/rich hanger and the biggest jet in the primeries without fouling the plugs, leaving the line @7,000 rpm. Geeeezs I miss that car!

TK-65: I got no vibes in the hour long conversation. As a matter of fact he was very livid about me winning saying "you deserve this win". "I have seen all the 12 other finialsts in person", etc. "you won by the largest margin ever" So, I do not think he would have said these statements or that he need too! Just my 2 cent

To The Rest: Thanks

Believe me, Im not taking anything away from your car Dave. This award is purely based on online votes. Every car owner gets on their forum, like you did here, and asks people to vote for their car. Everyone votes because they want their brand to win. A pro touring clone won the award last year. I remember reading a bunch of letters saying that the car didnt even belong in the magazine, yet it won the best car of the year. The pro touring guys got behind it and it won.

Nice Dave, Congrat's!!!!!

Nice to see all that hard work paid off. That car is one of the best restored W-31's I have ever seen. Not over restored like most but a perfect example of how they should look after a restoration...........MINT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Congrats!

Dave,

I only got to spend a few minutes looking at your W31 at the Nat's in Sturbridge and was quite impressed. Your winning was well deserved.

However... you realize you just took all the wind out of my sails as I doubt another 70 F85 W31 will win that award again. I just hope mine is close to the quality yours is when I'm finished.

Let's hear what you do run when you start taking it to the strip!

Jim

Congrats, and Olds rules again, makes me wonder if they will have an Olds next year for fear of domination of the award.

Cool Dave.......I admire the S/SS racers. You guys do/did an outstanding job with so little that is allowed!! I quit attending NHRA races a couple years after Olds stopped the backing because I always walked thru the Sportsman pits looking at the Olds cars there. Too bad they faded away so quick . Again Dave......damn nice car!!!

Congrats Dave! Well deserved
I love it when us "Olds" guys pull together to get the vote out for the best Olds out there. 3 of 4 Olds in the last 4 years at Hemmings is great!
Can't wait to read the follow up Hemmings article.

He had it at the strip at least two times last year that I know of. One at Musclepalozza, which is where the Hemmings article photos were taken. And then Stanton for the Pure Stock Muscle Car Drag Race. I'll let him tell you what it ran if he wants, but that Garnder exhaust choked the #$^#^ out of it.

Ok, here you go to the best of my mermory:

Three time trial runs. 1st) 15.13 @ 94 mph 2nd) 14.80 @95.5 3rd) 14.43 @98.6

Note: 1) I have not been down a track since 1992. Thats 18 years ago!
2) "What is it with the bulbs on the tree?" I asked someone
after my first run. I was told they are not incondesent, but
LED! WHAT! Did that throw me off on cutting a light? My
first run RT was .221 Geeeezs
3) No excuses here, it was what it was, its just that I guess I have not kept
up with the "changes" so I "will roll with the changes" per REO.
4) Could not launch the car right, bad bog. Man these repo
Goodyears hook up!
5) NO TACH, talk about not being prepared!

Entered the 14.00 to 15.00 bracket, dialed a 14.40:

went 14.53 on the brakes, won 1st round
2nd round 14.40 dial, went 14.58 @87.5 mph, won 2nd round
3rd round 14.20 dial, went 14.22 again on the brakes @ 90 pmh
4th round 14.10 dial, went 14.20 " " " " @ 87.5 mph

Note: By 3rd round I was cutting some .050 lights and getting use to the LED lights! Clearly this 4th round was in the high 13 teens! However on this run I blew out second gear syncro! Bummer Now it is the semis, three cars left and I got the "by" into the final!

By run, I get approached by Hemmings editor "you going to race or do we do the photo shoot, as light is prefect?" Me " I can always race, however getting in a mag is more important! LoL

Scranton, Mich PSMCDR:

Still not getting it right leaving the line. Still bad bog. Cutting some decent lights, worst .101 then in the .050 + range!

1st) 14.83 @ 95.5 mph granny shifting 2nd gear, power shifting 2-3 and
3-4 gears.
2nd) 14.80 @ 95.7 mph, still granny shifting 2nd gear.
3rd) 14.82 @ 95.5 mph, " " " " "

So the car really slowed up when I last ran at Muscleplooza, at Englishtown, NJ Oh well!

I was pared up with a, I believe 62' Ply. convert., automatic, with a 413 c.i.

Then the rains came. End of story!

I feel once I get 2nd gear fixed, make some pratice runs during a test-N-tune for several sessions, and try slipping the clutch more to get rid of the bog, and start tuning the carb., plugs, timing, I think I can get it to mid or low 13 teens, without changing the exhaust. After some tuning and more pratice runs, I will step up and remove the Gardner exhaust and go to a 2 1/2" mandrel bent system and X pipe from T/A Performance. Then I think I can break in to the high 12's!

Thank You Brad!

Is this unreal Brad or what. Especially when you tack on all my wins at Hot August Nights, three Best of Show at three different casinos, winning the 2nd highest award, Best Restored Stock Car, and $2500 in cash/prizes!

Man you got that 77' looking really, really fine. Enjoyed your articles on some of the work you did on that car. Also, I really like the color combo!

Please keep up the excellent work you do with editing/producing "Journey With Olds" mag.

later,
dave b.

StickW31: You just paid me the highest compliment, saying that the car was not over restored! Exactly what I wanted to accomplish, to look like it was just delivered to an Olds dealership. Flaws and all! Actually if I did over restore it, believe it or not, it would have been way cheaper!

All of the judges at the 4 events that I won during Hot August Nights said the same thing. They all told me that "I am tired of seeing over restored cars!" Plus all the judges I would say (caused they looked like it) were 55 or more years old. Also, I think they knew more about the car than some of the OCA judges!!!!!!!!!!!! Which is sad.

So you guys doing a restoration for judged shows might consider what I did.

Or you can do what all the guys on the top of their game do - quit on top and give the youngons a chance - I'll take the car off your hands cause now it will be a burden to stay on top and I'll live with the frustration of trying to keep it there.

TK-65: I agree on voting for the brand, but in my case, NOT ALWAYS! Go to the V8buick.com website, under the Forum - "The "Pure" Stockers", thread "I WON - Hemmings Muscle Machine" and you will see that various makes like, Buick, Ford, Mopar, and yes even Ch**y voted for me! So it just wasn't the Olds people voting.

Stevengerard: You are TOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO funny dude! LOL
