fuel pump?

Here's my situation.. My car has been hibernating all winter in the garage. Before I put her away I pulled the battery, filled the tank 3/4 way added a bottle of stabil.

yesterday I needed to move some things around in the garage so I wanted to pull the car out and into the driveway to make it easier.

I put in a brand new battery( old one was going bad anyway), I turned the key put my foot all the way down on the gas pedal and the car fired right up but wouldn't idle and stay running, so like an idoit I pumped the gas a lot while cranking and probably flooded the carb

I turned ignition off pulled off the air cleaner and saw gas around the Rochester 4bbl carburetor, I then looked under the car and had a puddle of gas on the floor I had to walk out of the garage I was getting light headed from the fumes..

I left well enough alone for the day and went back out today and the car starts right up but again wont idle and stay running, I only pumped gas once and gave up since it was cold and dark. after walking to the back of the car to close the garage door I noticed dark wet drops of what looks like oil/gas? blown out of the tail pipe?

I've been reading posts here that suggest these are symptoms of a bad fuel pump... Does this sound right with what I explained?

It may just have a stuck float.
Try tapping on the front of the carb
above the inlet with a small ballpeen.
Sounds like the fuel pump is working fine.

No what I believe you have is a lot of condensation that came out of your exhaust mixed with the unburnt fuel from the car being flooded. I am perplexed by the gas puddle under the car on the floor. Did you find out where that came from?

My guess is so much gas overflowed out of the carb that it poured over and down the engine bay to the floor?

Yes, exactly. Stuck float, or a piece of crud stuck between the needle and seat, causing the fuel to overflow out of the carburetor through the vent tube, then over the engine and onto the ground.

Sounds like your fuel pump is working great, though!

went at it again today, same story, car fired right up and only stayed running for 30 seconds, before I could even get out and walk to the engine I could see the steam of warm gas spilling out of the carburator.

Did you seperate the line from the filter
inlet on the carb and check the filter?

Pull it, it will drain on the intake, then
tap the carb lightly in front to possibly
jar the crud from the needles seat.

If that doesn't do it, it may need a kit.

Matt, I had the same issue a month ago with the delta. The gas was pouring out of the vent....stuck float was the issue. I had an extra fuel pump, tried that first to no avail! So, I took the opportunity and had the carb rebuilt anyway. Runs better than ever now....

Have an extinguisher handy if you try to start the car before working on the carb.

next time....

I was able to get float unstuck, that is all it was, lots of carb cleaner and a few good knocks with a hammer and it popped right open. Took the car for a gas fill up and to pick up a 6 pack for tonight.. felt good to get out of hibernation.
oh and the heat cranks.. I was sweating with it on high fan after 5 minutes of driving

Good to see you got it figured out.
How dirty was the filter?

I decided to send the Quadrajet out to be professionally rebuilt. After verifying the numbers and confirming it is the original to the car. It wasn't cheap, but well worth it.. The car idles really nice now, and driving is like a totally different car then before..

Who rebuilt your carb? Somewhere in the Island? I remember talking to a guy during the 4 Towns Fireman Training Center car show and he said there's 2 guys who rebuilds carbs. One in Deer Park and 1 in Wantagh.
