Question backfire on start-up blows muffler - 69 442

Yesterday the car backfired and blew apart the driver's side muffler on start-up.

I seem to recall it backfired once last summer as well, through the carb, and maybe through the tailpipe once.

Maybe 20 years ago a backfire blew apart another muffler, but nothing like that since.

The car is running well, and strong, but perhaps a little uneven (missing on a cylinder on the driver's side?? bad valve?).

Naturally, I'm replacing the blown muffler but I'm a bit concerned about the backfire... presuming fuel in the exhaust?

What could be my possible culprits for the backfire? Was it random? Will it happen again soon? I don't want to blow apart a new muffler.

Btw, i'm replacing the stock 20+ year old 2" system with a 2.5" system from the manifold back, an h-pipe, and probably dynomax super turbos.

Any feedback on that idea is also appreciated as I've been overwhelmed with info on exhausts.

Thank you,

Aaron

Get a timing light and check your timing, could be a timing chain starting to go.

I would also check timing and carburetor settings before replacing the muffler. Ensure your car is in top running condition.

Had some nasty backfires turn the muffler into an oval on my 73 S. A new set of spark plugs solved the problem. If one fails to fire for a few seconds, a whole lot of raw gas builds up and Kapow!
