1971 Cutlass S straight 6 hood marking.
I have looked at this car many times in the last several years & just now noticed this marking on the bottom of the louvered hood. Looks like it says "no pad" referring to the insulation I assume. It is a '71 Cutlass S that had a Chevy straight 6 in it from the factory. I saw it shortly after it arrived & it's only the 2nd one I've ever seen.
I thought the hood marking was unique & wanted to share. Also pulled a set of hood louver retainers for another member.

It was common for early 71s to have the flat non-ridged fenders. The ridged fenders were phased into production during the model year. The strike also delayed implememtation of the new style fenders. Both my 71s have "70" fenders. My Lansing built 442 was built in early Sept. and my Arlington built SX wasn't built until December, after the strike.

I forgot about those '70 fenders. It's a shame they are rotted at the bottom rear. This yard used to have about 15 '68-'72 Cutlasses. They just crushed a bunch recently & there are only a handful left now. I keep picking bits & pieces off them, but really not much left at all.

I know the V8 cars had the underhood pad. I believe it was a 2 purpose item.
1. deadened sound
2. kept engine heat from damaging paint on the hood.
Is the body style on that car 33577 on the cowl tag?
Looks like that one also had the rolling chassis removed.

My old 71 442 conv. that I sold 12 years ago had a metal hood with the same "no pad" scribbled on the underside. Even after I painted the car I left the underside of the hood original because I thought it was cool. ~BOB

By chance is the radiator in the car anywhere? Looking for a CF passenger side tank with A or M date code. I bought one from a member here but would buy another if the price was right.
Thanks,

This is no different than the recent post of a 1972 Cutlass Supreme with a 3 speed column shift. It was the base standard unless upgraded.
Everyone is so used to seeing the Cutlass/Supreme/442 with V8's they just assume that the standard engine was a V8. Not the case at all. Just more were upgraded by dealer/private order to meet the demands of their client expectations and sales demographics.

Allan,
I'll have to check the braces on the bottom of those fenders but I'd guess they are junk. Also, the cowl tag is now in a private collection. I'll check with the owner to see what it shows.

The V6 is not mentioned in the '72 CSM at all, only the 350 and 455, so I think you're right.
And having driven for a year without the underhood pad, I can say that it hasn't eaten my paint. I don't live in a 40+ C country, though.
