1967 Oldmobile radio
I have a 1967 Oldsmobile Delta 88 with (believe it or not) a radio and an 8 track player. (original Delco) It also has an external audio amplifier with a HUGE heat sink and two big *** transistors. The amp plugs right into the radio. While the 8 track player functions mechanically, neither the radio or the 8 track player produce audio. I also have another radio that has no tape player or external amplifier and it plugs into the radio wiring harnesses. There is power going into the radio and the dial light comes on with the light switch. The radio without the amp input/output will not work. I'm thinking that the system is wired to work only with the amplifier.

1967 Oldsmobile radio
OK, but here is the thing. The back of the radio has a right front, left front, right rear, and left rear speaker outputs and a common ground. Radios at this time were usually monaural, I think this is a third year that Oldsmobile had a radio that actually decoded stereo ... add the 8 track player that would have a dual track head that would have provided a preamplified stereo output. This is an audio system that would been one step up from standard equipment. The only thing that the system would have needed would have needed would have been a stereo amplifier. The use of a huge heat sink indicates to me that the separate unit would have been an amplifier. The other clue is distinct and separate right and left speakers in the front and the back. The front speakers are tweeters, maybe an inch and one-half in size. It's the back speakers that would have needed the extra wattage. I think the actual radio and amplifier are wired together in such a way that the output to the speakers is broken without a working amplifier. Please explain how the extra unit is a "stereo device."

Please post a picture of the radio. No 1967 factory Olds radio had LF, RF, LR, RR outputs on the back of the radio. Oldsmobile did not use a 4 speaker stereo system until 1971 in the full size cars, and 1973 in the intermediate cars.

Olds DID offer a factory AM/FM stereo and 8 track player in the full size cars in 1967. There were only two speakers - a front center dash speaker and a rear RH speaker on the package shelf. The radio actually had two parts. The head unit mounted in the dash basically provided the tuner and the amp for the front channel. This is essentially the mono AM/FM unit. The second box under the dash is the amp for the rear channel. The 8 track player was a rare option that tied into the AM/FM stereo and used the same amps and speakers. If you have a stereo that has four speaker outputs, it is not a 1967 factory unit.

Yes, there was only one wire to each speaker. Again, the amp for the front channel on the factory stereo setup was simply the single channel amp found in the normal mono radio. This amp was duplicated in the stereo adapter box to feed the rear channel.

1967 Oldsmobile radio with 8 track
this is the car ... I am told it is a 1967 Oldsmobile Delta 88
this is the original radio .... notice the Delco unit has a stereo light and an eject button for the 8 -track. manual push buttons.
This is the replacement radio .. face is just like the others ... and the wiring harness for the radio is exactly the same as the original except the white plug from the amp?<br/>

OK ... my bad. What about these radios? Still a real stumper. This separate unit for an amplifier is a real pain. Second question: the delco unit with the stamped outputs on the back ... shouldn't that work if I go directly to the speakers? I am told however, that this is a 1976 Oldsmobile Delta 88 Royale.
