The house was built in the late 60s, and all the wiring is 12 gauge. However, the new 12 gauge wire is considerably smaller than the 12 gauge I have removed. What’s up with that?!?! Both 12 gauge, yet it’s obvious the new stuff is smaller, both insulation and conductor.

Over 20 years ago, I was rebuilding my '66 Toronado- my first car- including converting it to four-wheel discs, and freshening up the engine I'd built for it in high school. I had recently launched my own small machine shop (custom products for sale online, not automotive) and wanted to try something cool.

As those of us with the early Toronados know, there's no real options for intakes unless you cut a hole in the hood, and this was long before there were any TBI EFI setups more sophisticated than an open-loop Pro-Jection.

So, with all the enthusiasm but inadequate levels of foresight that comes with youth, decided to make my own EFI intake, vaguely mimicking the old LT-1 doghouse.









I'd assumed I could offset a water neck, or even have a face-mounted neck, but I really just didn't leave myself any room. Drawings? Plans? CAD? Who needs those things. The seat of my pants knows everything! :)

I also didn't leave enough room at the back to clear an HEI, and my wimp 180 amp TIG just didn't have the beans to get a good weld on those 3/4" thick flanges. (And an air-cooled torch meant I could do about 2" of weld every two hours. :) )

The top of the doghouse was going to have a bolt-on plate, and yes, there was a valley cover that was going to get welded on. No, I spent no real time "designing" things like proper runner volumes or plenum flow- I think the most research I did was to have the injectors aimed as close as I could to the valve. The plan at the time was to run a MegaSquirt- I think one of the big names had a semi-universal controller I could have used, but it was something like $2,500, and that was too far outside my budget.

Long story short? Once I hit the brick wall of the water crossover/thermostat housing, the project fell by the wayside. I eventually sold what I had to somebody on ROP, I think, probably ten years ago. Don't know if he ever did anything with it.

I'd still like to try another, but this time have the TB come off the side, kind of like the Fox-body-era 5.0L Fords. I'm already working on something like that, but for a different engine... :)

For this issue they were looking for stories about Canadian Oldsmobiles. I sent a story in regarding my 1968 442 sport coupe. I just wrote about the restoration and the work done.
To my surprise my car is on the cover and a shortened version of my explanation was inserted later on in the issue. This will be an item that will accompany the host of items I have collected over the years.
It is a small thing but it gives one a small bit of recognition for the work done.

My 69 is referred to as “the OldOlds”

My 06 Ram 2500 4x4 MegaCab is known as either the Locomotive (because it’s a diesel) or The Bus.

My 02 Neon was referred to as “Avery”. This was my oldest daughter first car, she named it because there was a teacher (Mr Avery) that nobody liked with “bug eyes”. Because the headlights of a neon kinda bulge out, hence the name. I have since given that car to my brother in law, the name stuck.

My current daily driver: 05 Grand Prix. This was my youngest daughter’s first car, when she bought something newer I started driving it. When we bought the car, there were Mossy Oak/Ruger stickers on every window, a Transformer emblem glued to the bumper, basically stickers everywhere. The only one she wanted to keep was the sticker on the back window that said “Bat Mom”.

My 81 GMC was originally my grandfather’s truck, then my dad had it. He also has a 01 GMC S-15. To keep from confusing the 2 GMCs, the 81 is referred to as “Senior” the 01 is known as “Junior”.

My sons 92 Yukon is known as “Tex” one of his friends started calling it that. Not sure exactly why. His beater truck is a 97 S-10 that started life as a pest control/exterminator truck. You can still see the faded paint around the stenciling that clearly says “Scott’s pest control and exterminating”. So the truck is known as The Terminator. It even has Terminator skull valve stem caps.

I need to come up with a good nickname for my wife’s 22 Challenger. Since it’s white, I suggested Kowalski, my wife doesn’t like it.

There have been other vehicles with other names, but that’s the current fleet.

One of my first visits to Lansing I found the Oldsmobile assembly plant. Unfortunately, it was during is demolition. I did manage to grab a handful of bricks, they are proudly on display in my garage. I also have a couple on my fireplace mantle. Those have about 10 layers of paint, no doubt lots of history.

Found and visited the Demmer Engineering building. I was really surprised to learn it was still there.

The Bath, Michigan schoolhouse bombing location. I first learned about this about 20 years ago, I didn’t realize until fairly recently that Bath was right outside Lansing. For anyone unfamiliar with this, I’d suggest reading up on it. It’s sad and infuriating at the same time. Safe to say, Andrew Kehoe was plain bat **** crazy!!

Drove to Michigan state university to take pictures of Magic Johnson statue. They go well with my Larry Bird statue photos.

a couple years ago, we found and visited Ransom Eli Olds mausoleum. I wanted to pay my respects to the man that started it all. On a side note, his mausoleum also has a bit of bazaar history!

I recently learned that Jack “Doc” Watson is supposedly buried in the same graveyard. I have no clue if it’s true, if so that’s something else I’d like to see. Anyone know if it’s true?
