1970 442 W30 electrical problems

i have a 1970 442 W30 that will start with the altornator plugged in, but when i go to shut the car off, it wont stop running, the car will start with the altornator unplugged, and will shut off with the altornator unplugged, but eventually my battery will die, from not having the altornator plugged in. what can i do to fix this?

i would start with tracing the ignition wiring. the ignition circuit power supply is cut-off by the ignition switch, which then is supposed to ground the power wire to the ignition coil + terminal.

sounds like 1 of 2 possible things. Either way your alt is feeding ign circuit. Either the #1 wire is shorted to ign feeding coil or someone needed a wire that was powered with the key on to feed the #1 alt wire and spliced into the ign wire. Does this car have an alt idiot lite that isn't working or is it OE with guages?
