HELP: 67 cutlass dash lights and dash removal???

hey all,

ive looked and looked before posting this so maybe some one can help.

first, i am trying my best to figure out how to take the dash out partly in my 67 cutlass supreme so that i can get to the dash lights that light up my speedo and the clock and possibly any other light that should be working. i have flipped upside down but my big hands and arms can not fit into the very small part under the dash.
i want to change them out and add new l.e.d. lights. plus the lights in there now don't seem to be working at night and i really wish that they work before i turn my teenager loose with it at night time.

if anyone can help with this, i would be in your debt. thanks...

The factory assembly manual for this project and others is extremely helpful. It has exploded views of the entire instrument panel and all of the fasteners locations. Its a life saver. Readily available on line. Someone may be able to post a photo of the page you need. Mine is packed away.

thanks mark. yes, i have looked for a manual on line but have come up empty. i thought someone out there might have it posted but no luck for me yet.

i do like your thought of someone maybe posting a few pictures of this manual from their books if i could just find someone to do this.

thanks for your help and your reply.
p.s. i like the icon picture you have up. is this your 66?

You haven't looked hard enough.

Go to wildaboutcars.com, join up (it's free), and get the complete '67 Olds Factory Service Manual there plus a lot of other stuff. Removal of the Cutlass instrument panel is covered in the Electrical section beginning on page 12AA-1.

Yes that's my 66. Finished the resto a few years ago, but you know how that goes... you're never really finished. Always something to do or redo. I do love it though.

2X on the online assembly manual. I find that a hard copy is much easier to use, though. You need to own one. In order to get the dash out you need to remove the seats, steering wheel, radio, glove box, cables, and more to easily access the nuts that hold your dash and dash pad in place. Not really difficult, you can do it. Assembly manual shows all parts. Have fun.

thanks also tecar442. sounds like a chore to do. all i want is to change the light bulb. hope i don't have to go too far in depth because this is really my daily driver.

looks really good halffast! i'd love to see before and after pics if you have them.

I've owned '66 & '67 Cutlasses and 4-4-2's for 45 years and have changed lots of dash lights.
I've never had to remove the dash to do so.
If you have a factory A/C car, you may need to remove some of the ductwork under the dash,
but, this is much easier than removing the dash.
Just a few screws and the ducts are out of your way.

I've removed several dashes over the years.
If you decide to do so, I'll be glad to tell you what I know.
I have a factory manual if you need hard copies on the dash removal.

Agreed.
Reach up in there and twist and remove the illuminators.

x3. But if you insist on removing the instrument panel and pad, get a deepwell 11/32" socket.

Get a boy or girl with small hands to get up in there for you. My wife can get her hand up in there easily.

thanks for all of your help. have been sick so has taken me a while to respond.

i guess i should have been more specific in my words but yes, all i want to do is to pull the lights out from the dash and replace them with l.e.d.'s to illuminate better.
i'd like to do the least amount of work as it is to get this done. pulling the dash is the LAST thing i want to do. i just don't have the knowledge to do what i need to do. this is where the help part comes in.

i have laid on my back upside down under the dash and i know there is not physical way i know of removing the lights in dash. i dont see them plus my hands resemble bigfoots hands.

if someone could tell me what im looking for that would work out great. i have an automatic and it does have factory air.

Mr Nurse Dude
I have read where LED's have a Polarity to them.
You may just be 180 degrees off.

If that spreadsheet works for a 69 convertible and help me changing some of the bulbs around the dash, I would be very interested in seeing it.
