Inaccurate fuel sender

Last fall I had the fuel tank out to fix a leak around the fuel sending unit. The sender and gauge worked correctly but the gasket leaked. I had already purchased a new sending unit prior to dropping the tank just in case I needed, so I used the new one, instead of just replacing the gasket. Now the gauge only goes to 3/4 and drops rapidly towards empty. Somewhere between E and 1/4 is really a 1/2 tank. My questions: is there anyway to adjust without dropping the tank again? Is there a way to adjust the sender after dropping the tank or do I have the wrong or faulty sender? Thanks for any input. Steve

I don't know of any replacement sender that's accurate. They all pretty much do what you mention. Even some "NOS" GM senders you find now do that. You can't adjust it w/o dropping the tank again. I suppose if you are electronically savvy you could put a resistor with a rheostat under the dash somehow. It's easier to drop the tank. There's a long thread about the sender probs on one of the Chevelle forums.

Unfortunately the tank needs to come back out and you need to adjust the swing arm. If you still have the original, you can use it as a guide to bend the arm to match.
