Attacking the wiring options

Hello everyone. I have a 1971 Cutlass S I’m restoring with a 1964 Small Block 330. I’m currently trying to get the engine started and having issues. My car was a field find so needless to say, mice. The engine harness has seen better days. I don’t have as much time to spend going through each individual wire to determine if it works (not sure how I would do that).

My question is this:

Is it worth spending a couple hundred bucks on a new wiring harness, thereby removing a variable of why the engine and other components won’t work? If so, what do you recommend?

Thanks for the help!

I believe it is well worth it to replace any harness that you may be having trouble with. Here are two companies I use and both are plug and play and you will be happy using either one.

Hope this help you.

Thank you so much! Pretty easy to install? Any issues that arose?

If your harness is questionable i.e. Cracks in insulation or many splices etc replace it. I have an m and h harness in mine fit good and has the HEI distributor wire instead of a resistance wire.

They are made just like they came originally from the factory. Very, very easy installation. And no problems after the install.

Did you pull the whole dash to replace or keep intact?

X2 on M&H. I had mine built with the HEI wire and set up for internally regulated alternator.

This what I’m leaning towards. Another question if I may, did you replace the dash harness as well? Or did you just stick with the new engine harness? The dash harness is QUITE a bit more expensive and I was hoping to replace engine harness first for $125, get the engine running, and when I tackled the interior I could replace the dash harness if I needed to. Thoughts?

I did not replace my dash harness. Luckily it was still in good shape. I only replaced everything under the hood, so the engine harness and the forward light harness.
