fuel guage
Hi, I am trying to get some info o how to troubleshoot my fuel gauge in my 62 cutlass. When its reading between E and 1/4 its actually empty. I don't have the tool the manual talks about. Anyway to test with my voltmeter?

Probably the float is not adjusted right. However if you want to test the system minus sender, remove the wire at the sender or nearest plug. Turn the key on and the gauge should read past full, ground that same wire to the body and it should read empty. If it does this then the sender is out of adjustment. You can either live with it or drop the tank remove the sender and adjust it.

Keep in mind that these cars use a 0-30 ohm sender, not the 0-90 that newer GMs use.
Also, check the plug at the instrument cluster. Those pins can get dirty and increase resistance in the circuit. When you're only looking at 0-30 ohms, it doesn't take much additional resistance to cause problems. I had exactly this problem with my 62. Cleaned the connector and the fuel gauge started working.
