Gen light on

Gen light on
Ok so I have read some of the posts on this and I see what things do. My gen light is on when key is turned not started. All good there. But when running the gen light is on as well. New battery, alternator tests good. Aside from confirming that no wires are broken, why is that darn Gen light on? Also I found my kick down switch was kind of sticking so I removed and cleaned up reinstalled but the pedal does not push it enough to activate the switch. Is there something else on the gas pedal arm that should be there to increase the travel of the plunger? 1968 442 with a 425 in it. Trying to get to home coming and I need to fix a couple of things so I feel safe. please help. IT is the original setup with external regulator no conversion. I believe it is the original alternator as well. How do I tell please? I can be called and walked through some tests if anyone is willing. Thanks Angelo

Basic voltage regulator testing is outlined in your Chassis Service Manual, but since regulators are so cheap, just replacing it is sometimes the easiest way.
That being said, make sure that all of your wiring and grounds are good, and your connections are clean between the alternator and the regulator before doing anything that costs money.
The fact that voltage at the battery is 14.4V indicates that the regulator is fundamentally working properly. It would be fair to test your voltage with all accessories turned on (High beams on, blower fan on High, Wipers on High, etc.), first at idle, then slowly increasing RPMs to about 2,000 and watching the voltage. Voltage will normally be a bit low at idle with all of the accessories on, then increase to 14.4V somewhere between about 1,200 RPM and 1,600 RPM. If it does all of that, then all of the parts are working right, except for the part that controls the warning light, which, as far as I can see, leaves replacing the voltage regulator as the only way to fix it.
Stellar would be able to give you a more thorough answer, and more specific troubleshooting advice, if you want it.

Gen light on
This sounds like the same problem that I had with my 68 post car. I resolved it by removing the guage cluster and resoldering the terminals for the wire connector on the printed circuit card. Its not the most fun job but is made easier by removing the driver's seat to access the rear of dash panel. there are two 1/4" nuts holding the cluster in, it removes from the front.

Thanks will look at that.

My Gen light would stay on when I turned the ignition off. If I put a load on the car say turn on the headlights you'd hear a"tink" and the light would go off. Turns out the divorced regulator was sticking. I replaced it with a solid state regular with an OEM cover about 15 years ago. Problem solved and never came back.

Thanks
I have not resolved yet. I drive down anyway. Best car I have ever driven and I got initial advice here to put 425 in my car and was. Eat advice ever. I love that motor just rocked the whole way down and up. Such a powerful and strong engine. Thanks to John Greene for selling it to me

No bug at all.
Have no time investigated my gen light yet. Seem so maybe ground issue in the cluster. I drive down to homecoming. In the car and could not have been a happier boy. Driving his hot wheel.
