New discovery....can someone tell me what the *&^(%^ this is?

Members of this forum made me feel like Carol Shelby's grandson because I was finally able to locate the turn signal flasher and change it. Being on my back and sliding onto the drivers side floor (I'm not 17 anymore), I discovered this (see pic)...there are two of them, and I'm not sure what they are...vents? Lights? Whatever they are, they're not working...any help identifying is appreciated...

Lights to assist in seeing what is underneath them on the dash. Turn the lights on and see if they light up.

That should be a lens with a light behind it.

I recently installed an aftermarket radio and new speakers in my 71 98. To install the speaker on the driver's side you have to remove the instrument cluster which houses the AC controls, cruise control and lights. On my 71 98:

1) Pry the lenses out
2) Remove the light bulb and fixture.
3) Remove the 4 screws holding the instrument cluster to the dash
4) Unfasten the grounding strap on the lower part of the dash.
5) Remove the blend door actuator cable.
6) Remove the instrument cluster from the dash.
