How to test fuel tank sending unit?

I am not very well-versed in electrical matters. Can anyone explain how to test a fuel tank sending unit from my 72 cutlass so I can determine if it works before I install it in the tank? I do have a multi-meter, just not exactly sure how to go about testing it. Thanks!

Most sending units have a center post and possible ground tab.

Hook your meter to the center post and tab, if no ground tab then clamp to the mounting flange. Set your meter to low range ohms and move the arm up and down and you should see a varied resistance through out the range of travel except may the last area of empty or down.

GM sending units are 0-90 ohms. The lower the resistance, the lower the gauge reads if the wire between the tank and gauge is open, it will read beyond full. If the wire is grounded, it will read empty.

Hi guys. Does anyone have a photograph showing exactly where to hook up the multimeter to the fuel tank sending unit out of the car to test it? Thanks!

There's a little brass snap connector and ground.

Not too many ways to do it wrong.

It should range from 0-90 ohms.

Connect the meter positive to the brass post above the yellow insulator and the meter ground to the ring terminal on the wire or any part of the metal flange.

Or vice-versa. Doesn't matter.
