Ignition switch

Putting new ignition switch in 70 442 4 speed. How does the rod go back in switch? Have been trying everything. Hole in switch does not seem big enough for rod but old one looks the same. It is a Delco Remy switch new. What is the secret to fitting rod in hole? I am talking about the electric switch on top of steering column not key lock switch. Got it figured out. Did not fix my problem. Next step starter. Just clicks when try to start. Got problem fixed finally. bad wire to starter had been spliced and was loose.

That's the problem with these old cars, no telling what has been done over the years. Look on the bright side, you have a really good understanding how the start circuit works.
