Fuel gauge issue - 70 Cutlass Supreme

I've gone through many of the threads here regarding fuel gauge problems. Like many others mine sits at the 3 o'clock position when I start the car and remains there for quite awhile. After some time it will start to work but always indicates more fuel than is in the tank - if it shows half a tank, in reality it's almost empty. We also have a 70 442 so I took the gauge out of it and it works just like it should - if I put the one from the Supreme in the 442 it still doesn't work so I'm pretty sure it isn't a wiring issue. Any suggestions or advice?

I'd start looking for grounding issues. It can either be at the gauge, or at the tank.

I had similar issues. Check your grounds. Check the ground for the fuel sending unit attached to car under the trunk. Also, check the gauge contact to the grounding strip.

Sounds as if you have isolated the fault to the gauge itself. I'd open it and look for any obvious issues.

Yup sounds like the gauge, there is a resistor on the back that may have a loose connection.
