1972 cutlass 350 starter issues when hot

I started to notice this problem last year. Took my cutlass for a drive . Ran in the store real quick , went to start it and it cranked slow before it caught. Thought it was the battery , but it started right up this spring with no issues. If I let it cool down a bit , it’s fine . Turns over normally. I’m going to take it to auto zone to have them load test it this weekend. Checked the ground and it seems to be fine. Any thoughts? Maybe heat related ? I do have headers . Thanks in advance.

Put your starter back in and make a relay. Just finished mine not too long ago AND no more heat soak. A lot of info on how to do this and it's easy and low $$.

Had same problem. The positive cable was damaged/burned at the starter. Replaced and was good to go.

Make sure the battery is fully charged, then disable the ignition and do a voltage drop test on boh the positive and negative cables while cranking the engine. Put the positive probe on the positive cable end st the battery, put the negative on the positive cable end at the starter. When you crank the engine, the meter will tell you the difference in voltage between the battery and starter. If it’s more than a couple tenths of a bolt, either the cable is undersized, or there is excessive resistance (corrosion, bookenwires innthe insulation, bad cable ends) you can do the same on the negative cable.

Too far advanced timing will cause your issue also.

Thanks guys . Im going to be changing the oil this weekend , so Ill visually check the cable and do a voltage drop test. I have a timing light , so ill check that as well. Im also going to take the battery to auto zone to have them do a load test on it . Its an interstate 6 year battery in its 5th year.

Thanks for everyone’s help. Everything checked out . It ended up being the battery.
