1971 350 4 speed posiive battery cable

Need someone with some pointers. Disconnected positive cable at the starter. Replacing cable with correct type. I took bolt out that holds the tube so I could pull cable out more easily, and more of a straight pull. I cant get it out from behind the starter up against the block. There is a "strap" around solenoid that bolts to block. Does this need removed? Do I need to lower starter? Has to be a trick I am overlooking. It looks like exhaust pipe would need removed to actually change the starter? My how simple things turn complex.

It may be routed to the inside of the solenoid. Remove the strap bolt and loosen the one on the block, then loosen the inside starter bolt and remove the outer one. It should give you enough movement to get the cable out.

The 'strap' is more than likely the brace from the starter to the block. 2 bolts hold it in place. You shouldn't have too much of a clearance issue on the exhaust unless it's an aftermarket that doesn't have the correct routing.

Took strap off and cable fell out. All good now. Had original cables on it, but somewhere along the line the ends were cut off and generic ones added. The ones I bought were exact in color / text / length.

Thanks for the tip. It lokked / felt like there was enough clearance but there was not. Was surprised that the clutch return spring was also mounted to the starter "strap" bolt.
