blown alternator?

i took the battery out of my 67 Delta the other day to start my other car...when i went to connect the cables back in this morning the alternator sparked with a puff of smoke. No way did i "switch cables" accidentaly as they aren't long enough to make that mistake. Now the "generator" light is dimly pulsing with the car running and with it off the generator light is lit brightly...any ideas?? Very simple re-connection of a battery, nothing should have happened.

Maybe you put the battery in backwards. Fix the alternator and you will be good.
