Paging Joe P: 65-70 Big Car muffler recommendations?
I just had the exhaust on my 66 98 convertible redone. The old system was a mishmash of 2.00 and 2.25 pipes various mufflers and rusting resonators. But it was quiet. Someone here said a 98 should be "seen & not heard". A little extreme, but directionally correct.
A local good muffler shop redid the exhaust with 2.5" pipes, H pipe in the middle, and put flowmaster (40's?) on there. They also welded in bungs for 02 sensors so I can really dial in the qjet. That'll be fun.
The exhaust is too loud. So loud my wife heard me from inside the house coming up the drive. So loud I couldn't hear the squeaks I know all too well. The kid in me grins a little at the noise, the grownup knows the drone will keep me from driving the car. Idle drone is particularly annoying in just 20 minutes.
From reviewing Joe P's posts, it looks like his preference would be Walker Dynomax Turbos in a 20" length. Is that right (Joe?...). Is that what you did on your 67 Delta 88?
Opinions, noting that as I get older I like quiet more?
Thanks in advance

Cf, here's Flowmaster's line up of mufflers. It seems the 40 Series muffler is pretty aggressive:

Go back to your exhaust shop and ask about having quieter mufflers installed they probably have a house brand that will save you some money.

I put Dynomax 20" Turbos on my 67 D88. Even those are a little on the aggressive side - frankly more than I expected, but not as loud as the 14" Turbos on my 442s. Possibly they will quiet down a little as the insides get coated with carbon. Walker also makes a QuietPower line. I have not tried these, but they are apparently a little quieter than the Turbos, yet still flow better than OEM.

For reference, my wife & I took an iPhone DB meter app to the 2.5" flowmaster exhaust with resonators. At 10' and 5' idling produced about 70 and 72 db respectively. Then I revved it up to 2000 RPM, the noise level then rose to 75 db at 10 feet.
We agreed the trouble with the flowmasters is not so much the DB as the pitch or note. It's just too bass-y and burbly for a 98. Especially a not-well-sound-insulated convertible. I took each of my daughters (12 & 15) for a short ride tonight. Both cringed.
Switching to walker Walker Dynomax tomorrow morning.
The kid in me still likes the noise a little, but the adult would tire of it pretty quickly. It's just too much at idle. Not all that bad at part throttle cruise when you're moving in front of the noise.
Good experiment, bad outcome. Time to iterate. Hope this helps some of you.
cheers

I just put a 20" Dynomax Super Turbo on a 2012 Expedition I just bought about a month ago. I am 100% pleased. It is only slightly louder than stock and has a mild tone with no drone. I think you will like these mufflers.

My brother had the flowmaster's 40's on his '74 T-bird, too annoying, and wrong or that kind of car. I had Walker silent Q's on a '66 GTO years ago, a nice rumble at cruising speed that opened up when you mashed it, I think that the Walker QuietPower is the modern version of it.

I had a 66 Dynamic, 425 4bbl and had a muffler shop put on a dual 2 1/4 inch pipe system on with stock mufflers and no resonators. It was too loud for a 4dr IMO. I put a stock dual system on my 66 Delta with resonators and it was just right....stock sounding which I like.

My '72 98 has an unknown manufacture muffler and was loud and with an odd burble/drone. A duel exhaust is in future plans but for now I installed a resonator. I happened to have found an NOS replacement part but there are many choices out there. It may be an option for you.

My brother could not remove the Flowmaster mufflers from his car fast enough. The droning inside the car made even a short trip unbearable. Much better since he installed Walker Quiet-Flow mufflers.

I run 50 series Flowmasters and like them a lot. Idles nice and quiet, a little rap on extreme acceleration, babbles some on let down, no drone at higher RPM, and I can talk to my cup holder with out yelling. Fits my needs and I would buy them again..... Just saying It's a pretty subjective subject...Tedd

If you’re asking about the starfire exhaust manifold & associated half-moon transmission rod, I’ve got ‘em. Junkyard score in the 80’s or 90’s. Nice factory additions. Made my month!
