1956 Oldosmobile 88 steering gear box
Hello,
My brother recently bought a 1956 Oldsmobile 88th sedan. His Steering gear box have a leak, and we want to replace it or repair it and we need some suggestions and where can we get a new steering gear assembly, or do you guys recommend to repair it (where can I get the kit?). Thank you guys for the help.

That is a sweet ride. Try http://www.rockauto.com/ They have the seals your looking for. Its rare that you have to replace the box. The first thing I suggest is to get your hands on a shop maunual. You can find these on e-bay just type in 1956 Oldmobile. Good luch

I got some new info from my brother and maybe I did not stated correctly the first time:
The problem he is having is that the Power Steering sends fluid to the king pin (please correct me if am wrong) but the king pin is rejecting that fluid so thats why the steering is hard and is like if he had no P/S.

Welcome, that is an awsome car!
You were correct the first time. The power steering pump sends hi pressure fluid to the steering gear box. IF the steering gear box is leaking you might also check out Kanter or Fusicks for replacements or rebuild kits.

Contact Chip at Power Steering Services in Springlield, MO. Here is the link:

Chip is great guy and will rebuild your steering sector to like new. He did a 54 for a friend of mine. It was like new. I am confused about fluid going to the king pins. King pins are part of the suspension and attached to the control arms. I am not sure but I think the 56 has ball joints instead of king pins. The 54 still has king pins. The 54 has a huge sector with power steering and the shaft comes out and runs all the way to the steering wheel. There is no rag joint connecting the column to the sector.

I was going to ask if it had power steering, but I see that has been answered. I agree don't mess with this, send it for rebuild. It's not cheap. I would get the pump and the sector rebuilt together along with the new hoses. Nice ride, but the 56 still has kingpins. I replaced mine with a kit that uses roller bearings. Good luck and welcome to the site, lots of helpful people and good infor. Rket56

I've heard of Chip before. Supposedley his work is top notch. The parts come back looking like new, and he can even put a quicker ratio in your steering box. You get what you pay for! I might send my unit to him in the future.
