1955 88 windscreen motor issue
HI All,
I have and issue with mounting the wiper motor back on the car, there seems to be a bracket or something missing as the motor bolts aren't wide enough for the holes in the firewall.
IS there as bracket that goes onto the wiper motor?
Cheers
Dan

Hi Dan
There is a plate between the motor and the firewall. Here's a couple photos to show what I'm describing. Do you have everything in the pictures? John

Hi Dan
If you can't find yours I've got one on a parts car. If your interested I could pull it this weekend and send you more photos plus an estimated cost to your door, purchase plus shipping. John

Dan if your going to use the car at all, get a newport engineering motor, its nearly a direct swap and will do the job properly. However if you're restoring the car the vacuum motor is a must, but they don't work that well.
I've had a newport motor on my 55 for years and it was one of the best investments I made. Given the downpours you get up your way the vacuum motor would see you hiding out at servo's until the rain eased up.

Thanks Flatoz. I think I will go that way, the car is getting close and if I can get the backing plate and bolt new one on that would be the better option.
So they advertise on the site it bolts on? do you need any modifications done to it??
Cheers

I think that backing plate is actually the windshield wiper transmission. If you get one from a 54, make sure it is a later model since there were two different ones in 54. The one John has is a 55 and you can do business with anybody any better than John (2blu442).

OK, I've still got the 1955 cowl and this piece is still attached. I do see the difference with the two motor screws being staggered in 1965. I'm unable to remove these Phillips screws right now, I'll soak them down and it will likely be next weekend before I can get them off. John

If you go electric here is a link from when I did mine. There are a few helpful hints that will save you some grief. If I ever build another car I'll go electric again.... Teddhttps://classicoldsmobile.com/forums/vintage-oldsmobiles/48503-electric-wiper-motor-installed-today-55-a.html

the motor is held on with 2 screws. but try as I did, I could not get the US pass side one in there. I ended up making a stud out of some SS rod I had ( think the thread is 10/32) and used a nut. at worst case a trip to the bolt store and cut the head off would have done, but I had that stuff there so went with what I had at hand. That was the worst part of it, apart from that it was bolt in and works a treat.
Adding to that, my car is my daily driver, so it was important to me that the wipers work. I looked at trying to adapt a holden motor etc. but in the end I wanted something that was going to work, and work properly. And newports motor does exactly that. Also if you spend the $$ and get their little piece, you can end up using the original bezel etc so it still looks factory at the switch. It's not cheap, I think about $350 aussie, but 8 years down the track I can honestly say I would spend the $$ again in a heart beat.

wiper motor
I replaced my vacume motor with a rebuilt unit from NY but it was 20 yrs ago and cannot remember execate details, but it has performed magnificently ever since . very fast and powerful, and my fuel pump vacume booster works so the wipers never slow or stop. I have owed a 10 of these cars ever since they were new and only had to replace this one. they say they are not so good, and I understand that mine have all worked well. I like to keep things original whenever possible.
