Need Pics of inside pumpkin 71-72' 8.5 10 bolt
Can someone please post some good pics of a empty 8.5 pumpkin, inside the pumpkin overall and especially where the axle gears mount to on both sides and into the tubes. Tons of photos out there with carrier installed, but little to nothing of empty pumpkin. Need to know if below is a problem or not. Thx in advance.

It is fine. That is so the oil can bye pass the carrier bearing to the axle bearing to get oils. You are ok that is a factory cast in notch. JIm
The picture with the caps is a OLDS 10 bolt 8.5 and has the holes in the case out board the carrier bearings that is hoe the axle bearings get their oil.
It is the whole reason for the BIG eye brown on the chevy covers the oil gets caught on that trough and trickles into the holes outside the carrier bearings and into the axle tube.
Take care, Jim Mitschke

Alright !! Thx Jimbo! I thought it might be that, but what threw me is the other sides hole (Driver side) is much smaller. So I thought it odd there would be 2 different size
holes on each side fo oil seepage. Passenger side is about an inch. Driver side is about 1\4 inch or so. How does the oil feed back into pumpkin or does it?
Jim, can you also take a look at that pinion spline thread I started last week that is right near the top? Pinion gear has flat tipped splines for lack of better terminology. Its a set of barely used Older Richmond 8.5 3.42 gears I got real cheap. Pinion splines are flat tipped, my original pinion yoke are peaked tipped splines. No workie.
looks like I need a new pinion yoke, or what?
