76 delta88 hurst royale/Landau

I have a bad axle, the stock one is 2” short. The car was partially built by hurst. My mechanic can’t find a replacement. 😟 any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks
It was my dads car and I really want to drive it.

Welcome.

I'm sorry, but what does that even mean? The axle wasn't "short" when the car left the factory. More info and photos would help you get a useful answer from the forum.

Hi Joe,
Sorry for the poor explanation. The shop working on my car ordered a new axle based on the stock part number for a 1976 delta 88. Evidently in the rear end in my car the axle is 2” longer than the part received. He can’t identify or find the correct axle.
I told him this model 2 door Royale Crown Landau was completed by Hurst. Is it possible they fitted a different rear end in the car?

It's far, far more likely that the shop ordered an axle shaft for a Cutlass. If the rear axle in your car really were 2" wider (per side???), the wheels would be sticking out of the fenders. I'm willing to bet that the new axle shaft has the 5 x 4.75" wheel bolt pattern of a Cutlass and not the original 5 x 5" pattern.

The shop needs to be 100% certain of the axle housing in your car - it could be an 8.875" Pontiac axle or a 9.3" Type O axle. Neither of these are easy to get parts for, which is why I suspect they ordered (or at least received) the wrong part. No vendor has them on the shelf. If you can't find a good used axle shaft, you'll need to have one custom made from a vendor like Moser.

dO YOU HAVE THE OLD AXLE SHAFT?
Please measure the full length with the picture provide below for measuring your axle correctly
Next we need to count the axle spline. 28 or 31 spline

Now we need a picture of your rear cover,
are your axles bolt or c-clip retention?

Great information, thank you. I just spoke to my shop, they ended up sending the axle to a custom axle shop. Replacement is ready.
Thank you for your help.
