Gm rear housing question

I would like to put a 9" rear in my 79 delta88. Moser sells a housing for b boides uo t0 76. Any reason why this would't fit my 79? I don't mind doing custom brakes or moving a mount or two

I don't think it is the same. 1973 to 1977 A-body (Cutlass/Malibu etc) is the same bolt in housing to your years B-body. Check with Monza or Brian Trick. I would think you can make a corporate 10 bolt with bolt in axles strong enough for any purpose.

You mean other than the fact that the 1971-76 cars are COMPLETELY different from the 1977-up cars, including completely different frame, suspension attach points, and an axle that is about 3" wider?

No, other than that, no reason at all...

FYI, the 1977-1996 B-body cars all use the same suspension design. Any axle that fits a Caprice/Impala of that vintage also bolts into your Olds.

For everyone OTHER than Oldschool88 (who I am not allowed to respond to...), Moser makes a 9" axle housing for the 1977-1996 Caprice that also bolts into that vintage Olds B/C-body cars (except the wagons). Only $2300 for a bare housing.

Snag an 8.5 out of a newer B body and it will have 30 spline axles. Bolt pattern can be fixed by either redrilling the axle or purchasing 90-91 ONLY Caprice police car axles as they're 30 spline and 4.75x5 bolt pattern.

Moser housings are only $595 2300 complete

The gm rears are a joke when compared to a 9 inch, fast cars don't normally carry a 10 bolt,or wven a twelve bolt. and for the record 10.00 is not fast. I have two 8 1/2 inch 10 bolt rears one with a 456 and the other with 3.42's both are loaded just getting tired of swinging them in when inchange what i'm doing with the car.

My apologies to everyone else. The ad I linked does specify $2300 for a complete axle. I didn't read far enough, I just looked at the photo.

Disregard my post. I didn't realize you were building a National Record Holder.

For the record

A 9" is a 10 bolt rear.... The bolts on the ring are what determine a 10 and 12 bolt rear NOT a cover...

If your going to use a 9" in anything, PLEASE use aftermarket parts. Stock nines are boat anchors. Sorry old school88 not trying to make anyone mad .... That rear has been ban aided from its conception - 28 spline to 31 spline then the Daytona pinion support because of oiling issues... then all the bearing size increases for the carrier. Plus all the old centers have been around the block so much they are just whooped, the drilled holes and castings are inferior for the torque and power getting put to the ground at the track these days. I have seen so many pinion supports just climb right out of the third member and take out drive shafts and transmissions because they built a STOCK third members for the track and high torque motors. BUY NEW 9" stuff (case and pinion support especially) if you think you have a real ground pounder there. The pinion shaft on a stock 9" is only 1.313... for reference a 7.5 has a 1.438 shaft...??? I know the 5th bearing... but really torque has to be delivered though the smaller pinion stem.... think about it... The axle shafts are larger than what is driving them...???

The 8.5 is still being used to this day in GM trucks 1971 - 2017 and still going...
Ford even copied the corp rear and made their own rear 8.8 ford... looking at the 8.5 and 12 bolt Chevy they came up with the 8.8 ford corp rear. Which appears they will be phasing out soon also.

The 10 bolt 8.5 built correctly which you can even upgrade to 30 spline axles will do most all street and strip work. 1973-1977 A-body gm cars are the same rear as the 1977 - 1987 B-body (excluding wheel bolt pattern 5 x 4.75 ) and the 1988-1996 were 30 spline
EXCLUDING wagons again which are the same width as the old 1971 - 1976 sedans

Please lets stay cool on the site and stick to the subject and play NICELY ... I really do not believe anyone here wants to hurt feeling etc.

Good luck on your choices.
