I am in now way wanting to start something here and don't like saying this but this is not a GM cover. This is a reproduction.

I understand this is your for sale thread, but I agree with Eric that this is a repo cover and not GM

I thought it looked like the one posted for sale a week or two ago, if either of you have a pic of the original one, I sure would like to get an education on this, thanks!

Look at this thread. I have posted a picture of my NOS cover. There are also a couple of original covers posted. https://classicoldsmobile.com/forums...over-real.html. Hope this helps

Thanks for the reply, I am having a hard time seeing the difference between the two. I am in no way doubting your expertise, I am confused on the difference between the two, is this a very early repro that looks very close to an original? In any event, you are the expert on these w27's and I will remove the add. Thanks.

Joe, I assumed only the originals had fins on the inside. But now I understand the early repros had them as well. So I went thru the thread you posted again and I now see the difference, it's very suttle, but it's there. The one I have is a very good repro of the original, thank you for sharing this, we learn something new everyday!

With it being the only known one in the world, it is worth whatever it take to get it from his hands. If I had an original W-27 with a busted cover, you bet it would be worth it to me.

Glad to have helped. Yes, your cover is an early repo, and the early repos are very nice. I would say that your cover is worth more than the current repos.

Original covers are very hard to find in any condition, and more difficult to find NOS.

So even knowing ad threads aren't really for discussion, how far back do the repro covers go? I have a 10-bolt W27 cover that's probably been on the car for at least the last 20+ years before I got the car. Has great patina, no part# embossed on the outside.

Currently (re)installed on my fully rebuilt 10-bolt rear. Curious to know if it's OEM or a repro at this point, since I recall reading 10-bolt covers were essentially a 1-year '71-2 item...

W-27 repos

I think the first W-27 repop covers were made about 1983-1985. I remember the guy making them was named Jody, and he was from central Pa.

I moved this from the classifieds as the discussion was informative for future reference.

my car was an original Pittsburgh, PA purchase - 2nd owner was in Delaware, car made it down here to FL around 1990 with the W27 cover in place at least since then, if not added by original owner when new.

car purchased new from (now defunct) Bill McCracken Oldsmobile in Homestead, PA

would be interesting to know for sure one day if it were possible

W-27 covers

October 1982 "Journey with Olds". Jody Coeyman selling repo 12 bolt covers. 10 bolt covers were available shortly after. By 1983 Fusick and Year One were selling his repos. Plus a couple more ads from the same issue.

yeah, that's the conclusion I was heading towards after all that's been posted. Maybe that'll be the incentive I need to spring for a TA Performance cover to replace it at some point
