Aftermarket 12 bolt vs. 9"

Hi all,

I'm looking for a rear end setup for my 64 2 door post F85. Id like to buy the complete package - either a 12 bolt or 9". Brand new. Does anyone have any suggestions? Brands for carriers, housings, axles, bearings, etc?

I'm set on a 3.73 posi setup. Just trying to nail down the details. I'd be inclined to order from Summit since I have ordered from them a lot with good results.

Thanks

There are manufacturers out there that will sell you a complete rear end ready to drop in but they are not cheap! Check out Moser or Strange websites there are others....

Couldn't be more happy with my Strange S60. I tend to go overkill

I'm just gonna say for ULTIMATE strength the Dana 60 is the way to go. 9 inch is nice if you want to swap gears occasionally but the Dana makes it and the 12 bolt look like tinker toys.

First and foremost,You should be honest with yourself about the goals for the car. I cannot and will not dispute the strength of a 9" or D60, however, are they worth the extra weight and parasitic loss in your application? I opted to build a 12 bolt with strange interns simply because it fits my needs.

FYI, summit will drop ship that s60, might as well cut out the middle man and order it directly from strange... great people to deal with.

I went with a Chevy 12 bolt, installed Moser axles,Richmond 3:55 gears,Eaton posi diff and rear disk brake conversion. Gearheads right what will the car be used for? My 455 makes 600 lbs of torque and the 12 bolt Chevy I built handles it with no issues and I drive the car hard, street car only.

Do your homework and as mentioned above Jim aka Monzaz is very knowledgeable....

I'm hoping my 455 will put out 490 hp and 570 ft lbs tq. The engine is in my garage waiting to be cleaned and assembled. The trans will be a 2004R with lock up I've been looking at the units from Extreme Automatics. This will be a street car to cruise around with that might go to the drag strip once or twice a year.

A 12 bolt will live a long life in that application even with moderately sized axle shafts. Skip the C-clip eliminators and weld on Ford 9"ends, don't worry about billet carrier caps and make sure you use Bowman bolts on the factory caps with a support cover.

There are plenty of full body drag cars in the 9 second range, with properly equipped 12 bolts, that live dead hooking on drag radials. I'm not trying to influence your decision, just giving real world info.

Good luck with the project.

Currie has 9" and 12 bolt rears, complete or housings, I switched to a 9" in my '70 for drag racing and piece of mind, worked great. Good luck.

Rear ends and power and torque

If you are street bound...ANY well built rear end will do the job for any torque and power output.
Reason - The street can not and never will hold the torque of any high powered car ro truck. The tires will easily break loose and the strain is gone from most parts except for the BEARINGS....NOW when the rear is spinning at 130mph in one spot you had better have good oil / level and the bearings better be newer and shimmed correctly to handle all this heat and extreme spinning.

So you can agrue till your blue in the face which rear is best.

It us your car and you pick the one that you think looks good under your car and fits the BILL.

If the rear fails it is not usually because it si a FORD or a DANA or a chevy...it is because it did not get put together right in the first place.

I am GM so I choose GM rear 12 bolt chevy for me if were voting.

reasons- The rear was built to handle the big block power and that was GMS reason for the rear from day 1.
They were under Impalas A bodys even 71 72 GTO gave in at the end and they were put in the high powered judge cars... Camaros, novas, COPo cars etc.
Parts will always be available also. Many different posi unit type for all applications of driving. efficient rear, Lighter than the 60 and 9" .

Hope this all helps. HAve fun guys.

VinMichael - If you need a quote on a complete rear just PM. 9", D60 or 12 bolt chevy moser
