Is this the proper way to measure ring gear diameter, doesn't look anywhere near 8.5?

Not disputing it may be an 8.5. Just making sure before I take it out of the car. Thought others were saying the ring gear was 8.5 diameter. Question is measure like in the picture or across bearing to bearing horizontally while in differential.

Bearing race part number.

No. Flip the carrier over and measure the O.D. of the ring gear teeth.
