The Pinion preload is pretty general with a inch pound torque wrench (bar type)
10 inch pounds on used and 15-20 on new bearing
Carrier pre-load is a whole other mess of worms and much more gray area... They do a spin test in the case with carrier shimmed and NO pinion installed. They spin the carrier to get about 1/2 -1 full turn free spin...NOW this is GOOFY because one persons spin compared to another is totally different...lol.
I use the tightness factor of shims on each side. If you can pull the carrier in and out by merely grabbing the ring and pulling out the carrier, then you do not have enough pre-load. IF you are damaging shims denting them etc. when installing then your probably way too tight. So between this is your area you want your pre-load to be. This is a lot of the reason most people do not want to set up rears as the gray area involved in set-ups. Jim
