Original 72 rear axle bearings and retainer plates vs. different looking new ones??

Original 72 rear axle bearings and retainer plates vs. different looking new ones??

The replacements i just bought for my 72 cutlass supreme 350 have a bearing and a "lock ring" which basically looks like a solid bearing without the *****, so to speak. Is this supposed to take the place of my inner retainer plate which resembles more of a collar with a flange to the inside? If so, Do i remove and throw away this retainer plate and replace it with the new lock ring? I have seen other posts which appear to do just this, but i want to make sure.

Yes, the new design lock ring is a thick collar as compared the thinner stamped original lock ring. You should end up with axle retainer flange, axle seal, bearing, and lock ring.
