1965 442 cutlass pinnon gear

, I noticed on the pinnon gear I removed a rubber o ring in the grove behind the splines, the gear set I am installing 390 has all splines no grove ,it is aftermarket .i do not ever remember seeing a rubber o ring on any olds pinnon, 323 gears is what Am removing, I looked in my 1965 service manual at the view of the ring gear installed , does not show a o ring, any idea what it is? My car is 1965 442 , factory 323 gears I am taking out.

That was to prevent pinion spline oil seepage... we just use liquid Teflon now...you can use natural gas pipe thread Teflon...
Just apply a small amount inside the yoke splines 360 degree and stay away from the pinion seal with the teflon.... you do not need much...
good luck, Jim Mitschke
