Currently has an 11 to 1 compression solid lifter cam race engine in it with a 4.66 gear posi in it. But I have the original numbers matching engine. It is a great survivor car, slightly modified but still VERY original. Hope to have the old girl back on the road next summer.

Wow, column shift so I guess front bench seat? It's amazing how the ultra-high performance cars back then could be had with the base level options, unlike today where the manufacturers price gouge you.

The base equipment for that car was a bench seat and a "Dearborn" HD three speed with Hurst floor shifter. If you ordered the optional automatic, you got a column shifter no matter if you had bench or buckets. If you wanted a console with buckets, you also had to order RPO D55. Cars were very much order-to-taste then. There were not the limited "packages" you see today, just a list of RPOs that you could pick and choose from. Manufacturers figured out that they could increase profits by limiting the variations on the assembly line, which is why today's cars come as package deals. It's just like "bundling" from your cable TV vendor.

Very cool W-Machine! Congrats on the purchase. I see you're in Michigan--will you have it up and running by Homecoming in June?

Probably not. I want to get new tires, flush gas tank and brake lines, repack wheel bearings, check brakes, misc, install new exhaust and go through engines to put one together for the street. Car currently has high octane racing fuel in it(no mistaking that stuff) and I`m not going to run an 11 to 1 motor that requires that stuff on the street. May or may not run it for a bit with the 4.66 gears in it before I change back to 3.91 gear. Don't want to do a rush job, plus I have another car partially apart that needs to go back together first.

Put on a new differential gasket, new gear oil and posi additive, changed motor oil and filter and put in a new set of spark plugs and 2 gallons of 110 octane fuel yesterday. Had the rear cover off to verify rear gear ratio, yep 4.66.

To my knowledge the 5s include a 5.00 and 5.33

We're there any other 5 series race gears?

Disassembled the original engine over the last week. The engine appears relatively unmolested, except for 1 replacement piston. Has the big valve #6 heads, original W-31 cam, rods, balancer and all the casting dates on the block, heads, crank, pistons predate build date of car. Standard bore with no ring land felt at top of the cylinder. All the rods and mains were checked with plastigauge and I inspected all the remaining pistons for any damage. I have a new NOS W-31 piston to replace the incorrect one. Hard to know why one piston was changed as the owner that did it is deceased. The story I got was owner pulled the original engine to put in a engine to go racing with. My intent is to reinstall the stock engine with all the original factory correct parts and enjoy it the way Oldsmobile built it.

Love it!! Noticed you have vent in window corner.... my 1970 Cutlass S does not have one......did they make both types of door windows in 1970?

Sport Coupes (2dr post) used vent windows through the 1972 model year. Holiday Coupes (2dr HT) stopped using vent windows with the 1969 model year.
