'70 Cutlass Supreme Gas Tank

I'm replacing the gas tank. Was the OE tank painted black / undercoated or was it bare metal? Thanks.

The tanks were installed "as is".....no paint, etc. The tanks have a plating or coating that adds some protection to the bare surface. Typically referred to as "Terne Plate".....made of a lead/tin mix.

If the car got DEALER-APPLIED undercoating then whoever shot the stuff under the car seemed to also spray the tank underside with the undercoat. I've seen that alot on dealer-undercoated Olds (and other Abody's) from our era.

Some people clean the new tanks and spray them with clear or you could use something like Boeshield T-9 (spray can applied wax/oil sealant) which can be reapplied periodically.
